Other Than This World
Azure Ray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somethings wrong you say
I looked into those eyes
A hundred times a day
Those deep blue wells so vague
Elusive as Christ until the day
The secrets spilled into my room
Down the phone line into view
I've waited all my life to know

Why our light is gone
Our white light that's home
Maybe love and peace are waiting for us
Somewhere other than this world
At least we pray

La la la la la

I'll write you and in my dreams
I'll lay on your chest to muffle your screams
And all the love I see I'll hold it close to me
In hopes that one day our secrets will be free

But now our light is gone
Our white light that's home
Maybe love and peace are waiting for us
Somewhere other than this world
So we pray

La la la la la

Overall Meaning

The song Other Than This World by Azure Ray revolves around a sense of emptiness, loss, and longing for something beyond this world. The first verse is about the difficulty of understanding the people we love. The singer looks into the eyes of their loved one a hundred times a day but can't decipher their secrets until they spill them into the room through the phone line. The line "elusive as Christ until the day" hints at the depth and complexity of the person's emotions and thoughts that are hard to comprehend.

The chorus suggests that the couple's "white light that's home" has disappeared, leaving them in a state of disconnection and looking for something more significant. They hope to find "love and peace somewhere other than this world" and they pray for it. The second verse reveals that the couple is physically apart - one is writing and daydreaming about the other while the other screams in agony in their sleep. The singer wants to hold onto the love they once had and hopes that someday, their secrets will be free.

The lyrics are poetic and evoke a sense of mysticism, bewilderment, and desperation to find meaning beyond this world. The song speaks to the innate human desire for something more significant than what we see and experience in the here and now.

When I was a grad student at UGA 20 years ago, one of these ladies was my next door neighbor at an apartment complex off Baxter Street in Athens. I can't remember which one now. She had kind of a blonde bob hairdo at that time as I recall. I remember her telling me she was from Alabama (like me) and about her band Little Red Rocket. I never forgot that name. I randomly thought of that band today, searched Youtube and learned they're the same women in Azure Ray. Glad to see they've done well. Sure wish I could remember which one was my neighbor now. So long ago. Funny where random thoughts can lead you sometimes.

Interesting video. The Azure Ray girls are beautiful, in a natural way. This is one of their very best songs from the amazing Hold On Love album.
