I want to tell you guys a story.
When my family was living in Nicaragua for a year and a half my mom had the cassette soundtrack of Yentl. Somehow I got hold of the cassette and started listening to it. I don't know how I got hold of it but I really liked the music.
At some point my father and I came back to the states for about six weeks because I had to have some medical appointments taken care of. Things that could not be done in Nicaragua. My mom stayed in Nicaragua with my sister and brother.
At some point I asked my dad if we could rent the V.H.S of Yentl from the local video store. We rented it and my dad recorded it for us to take back to Nicaragua.
My mom did not let me and my siblings watch the movie because she said it was not a children's movie. When I was young I did not understand.
Now I understand. There are some scenes in this movie that are not suitable for young children.

What's sad is when it began to sink in she was a woman he began shutting her out and bringing up the enforced roles of the sexes. The bond he had with Anshel, an intellect matching his own, and probably a replacement for his younger brother who committed suicide was crumbling. Then it all swirled down to the simple fact that they were a man and woman who became the best of friends then began falling in love. I really did like her dad's line in the beginning of the film that went something like, "Turn the world upside down, you'll never have a moments rest". But it was all worth it.

Because it was a lie. Yentl lied. The friendship never would have been established if she told him the truth, she never would have been in Yeshiva, they never would have met as equals. Any friendship built on a lie collapses when the truth comes to light.
