Wozo
BélO Lyrics

Ayiti, cheri, ou k manman libète
Ou s'on bèl fanm ki pa sante
Bèl kout plim ou nan listwa limanite
Sa fè de ou yon senbòl fyète
Ou pa fanm ki pòt wòb pou bèl twal
Men ou se yon fanm senk etwal
Jodi a, ou tranble, w manke tonbe
Men w met rejwi paske pral leve pi fre

Ou se wozo, wi, ou se wozo
Mèt tande w pliye, ou p ap kase
Ou se wozo, wi, ou se wozo
Mèt tande w pliye, ou p ap kase

Tank nou la, fòk nou viv ak espwa
Si n travay, n ap leve

Nou se wozo, wi, nou se wozo
Mèt tande w pliye, n p ap kase
Nou se wozo, wi, nou se wozo
Mèt tande n pliye, n p ap kase
P ap kase

Madanm, mare senti w
Sere mouchwa w
Se vre nou tonbe, fò n leve
Pandan n ap di yon gwo mèsi ak tout moun ki te la
Pou te ban nou lespwa
N ap di yo "N la, n ap kenbe"

Wo-yoy! Nou se wozo, nou se wozo
Mèt tande n pliye, n p ap kase
Nou se wozo, wi, n se wozo
Mèt tande w pliye, n p ap kase

Se vre nou pliye, n pa kase
Wi! Nou pliye, n p ap kase
Menm si nou pliye, n p ap kase
Wi! Nou pliye, n p ap kase
Nou se wozo, nou se wozo, yeah!
Nou se wozo, nou p ap kase
Nou se wozo, nou se wozo
Nou se wozo, n p ap kase

Nou se wozo, wi, nou se wozo
Mèt tande w pliye, nou p ap kase
Nou se wozo, wi, nou se wozo

Mèt tande n pliye
Nou p ap kase

Overall Meaning

The song “Wozo” by BélO is an ode to Haiti, celebrating the resilience and strength of the Haitian people. The opening lines praise Haiti as the mother of liberty, a beautiful woman whose feather is in the history of humanity, and a symbol of pride. The singer then addresses Haitian women, acknowledging that they are not just objects to be adorned with pretty clothes but women of substance, shining like stars. The chorus then declares that the Haitian people are like the wozo bird, which is strong and flexible, it bends but does not break.

The second verse reflects on Haiti's past and how the struggles it has faced, such as natural disasters (hurricanes and earthquakes) and political instability, serve to make them stronger. The singer acknowledges that they may have fallen, but they will not stay down. The chorus repeats the message that the Haitian people will bend, but they will not break. They are the wozo bird, resilient and unbreakable.

Overall, “Wozo” is an uplifting song about Haiti's perseverance, resilience, and strength. It is a celebration of the country's culture, history, and people, emphasizing the importance of optimism, hope, and determination.

Wozo est un une chanson émouvante. Ça sonne comme un véritable hymne à la résistance. C’est une sorte de mantra pour inspirer la force du peuple haitien face aux catastrophes naturelles. Bravo Belo !!!!

The timing for the video clip of the song "Wozo" is right on point. The aforementioned song speaks to both the earthquake moment that happened 6 years and 9 months ago and the actual moment with the ravaging Hurricane Matthew that had hit the southeastern part of our country. "Si-n travay n-a lévé" really means for me that if we get back to work like we did 200 or so years ago and have a national long term plan for the development of Haïti, we would be better prepared to protect the country from the aftermath of those natural/artificial catastrophes. We can't prevent the earth from shaking or the violent wind and rain from crossing our land, but, we can prepare better and minimize the desolation. The land of the island of Haïti is sitting on those three continental tectonic plates which are the North American tectonic plate, the South American tectonic plate and the Caribbean tectonic plate , so we will have earthquakes. Haïti is in the path of the wind and rain in the Carribean sea, therefore we will have those events, but as the song "Wozo" clearly stated, we can reverse the situation. But, work is the secret. Togetherness is the start. Selflessness is the fuel. Altruism is the motor. Resiliency is the dream. Patriotism is the magic. Love and reconciliation are a great platform to start.
