Ortaçgil released his first single, titled Anlamsız (Meaningless) while he was studying chemical engineering at the Istanbul University. In 1974, he released his first album, titled Benimle Oynar Misin (Would You Play with Me?). He married after releasing this album and concentrated on his family for the next ten years while working as a chemical engineer.
Afterwards, he began collaborating with another prominent Turkish singer-songwriter Fikret Kızılok. This collaboration resulted in the album Pencere Önü Çiçeği (The Flower in Front of the Window) released in 1986. Four years later he released his first solo work after sixteen years: 2. Perde (Second Act), which was followed by Oyuna Devam (Keep On Playing) a year later. In 2000, a tribute album; Bülent Ortaçgil İçin Söylenmiş Bülent Ortaçgil Şarkıları (Bulent Ortacgil Songs, Sung for Bulent Ortacgil) was released with the collaboration of various popular artists. This album remains the first and only tribute album in Turkey made for an artist who is still alive.

Bэrak ьzьlmeyi
Yalnэz sen misin bir dьюьn
Unutan sevilmeyi
Her siyahэn bir beyazэ
Gecelerin gьndьzь de vardэr
Kэzma onlara
Yalnэz sen misin bir dьюьn
Zincir oranda buranda
Her tutsaрэn bir kaзэюэ
Uykunu uyanэюэ da vardэr
Yьzьnь dцkme kьзьk kэz
Yaюamэn anlamэnэ bul
Sonra dinle kendini
Yolunu bil
Her siyahэn bir beyazэ
Gecelerin gьndьzь de vardэr
The lyrics of Bülent Ortaçgil's song, "Yüzünü Dökme Küçük Kız" carries a message of hope and encouragement for a young girl who seems to be experiencing sadness and disappointment. The opening line, "Yüzünü dökme küçük kız/Bırak üzülmeyi" translates to "Don't cry, little girl, let go of your sadness". The singer urges the girl not to feel alone and left out, "Yalnız sen misin bir düşün/Unutan sevilmeyi", meaning "Are you the only one who feels forgotten and unloved?".
The singer uses the metaphor of black and white, day and night to exemplify that every negative experience has its opposite positive experience. "Her siyahın bir beyazı/Gecelerin gündüzü de vardır" translates to "For every black, there's a white/ There are days and nights". The second verse encourages the girl not to allow herself to be oppressed by other people's opinions and criticisms, "Yüzünü dökme küçük kız/Kızma onlara/Yalnız sen misin bir düşün/Zincir oranda buranda", translating to "Don't cry, little girl/ Don't be angry with them/Think for a moment/ Are you the only one who feels tied up and lost?". The third verse advises the girl to find meaning in life, to listen to herself and to know her direction. "Yüzünü dökme küçük kız/Yaşamın anlamını bul/ Sonra dinle kendini/ Yolunu bil", meaning "Don't cry, little girl/Find the meaning of life/Then listen to yourself/Know your way".
Overall, Ortaçgil's lyrics in "Yüzünü Dökme Küçük Kız" carry a compassionate, uplifting message to anyone who feels like they are alone and conveys a hopeful reminder that life is full of ups and downs and that every negative experience has a positive one waiting to be found.
