I have had this done in a hospital setting and it was by far one of the most unpleasant things I've experienced but the difference is I accepted and willingly had this done to benefit my own health. Being forced to do something like this is plain wrong. To see a grown man sob like that is heart wrenching

Well I am a woman and spent 3 weeks having this done to me in the hospital. It is no fun, but it is mostly MENTAL...like panic. The procedure itself is uncomfortable, but not that bad if you try to stay calm and relaxed. Lots of people have this done while in the hospital, it's not that big of a deal.

Wow. I have to say that so many celebrities claim to want to help but I don't think I have ever seen someone go to this extent to understand another person's suffering. I sit here with nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Bey. He had nothing to gain here except the understanding of what those prisoners go through. Any celebrity can throw a fundraiser, and please don't get me wrong they are definitely making a difference, but this man went not just the extra mile, the extra ten miles. Let me make very clear that this message has been heard. You sir have succeeded in your endeavor. Thank you for reminding me that all suffering is of importance. I have had it done over 12 times. Anyone in the hospital for cancer, malnutrition, and various other illnesses have to get this. It is just an uncomfortable procedure, but not life threatening. Lots of people have it done. Only exception is those of us who need it can't just say "stop" when it gets rough....because it is needed to save our lives. It's more common than people think. I do panic when I get it though, not gonna lie. You know how a covid test feels when they put the swab in to far? Well it's like 500 times worse than that lol.

Myself and many others with chronic illnesses have been through this countless number of times, having is placed is awful but throwing it up out of your mouth while the rest is stuck in your nose is the worst. It's just a feeding tube bro. It's not like they gave him a vasectomy with no anesthetics or something. He was extremely dramatic, feeding tubes can be pretty uncomfortable, especially the insertion itself, but otherwise not the worst thing that could happen to you. If you think this is some kind of torture method you're gonna be scarred for life when you figure out they get waterboarded and beaten and drugged and all manners of ACTUAL torture in Guantanamo; but yeah let's get all up in arms because they won't let inmates starve themselves to death.

@wambamthankumam They would insert these tubes and pump their stomachs full till they vomited. Recently a detainee spoke out and said that they actively used it as a form of torture. If you've never had a feeding tube forced in against your will, don't even talk.

I've had this done to me, and trust me it is not comfortable or humane! I was not in guantonomo Bay, but was part of a hunger strike for better treatment of inmates and for inmates rights. This hit home and made me relive what I went through although it only took a month for us to get our better treatment(lasted 6 months across the state) they resorted to this on the 2nd week(only to th9se the felt influenced the uprising of inmates or influenced other inmates to participate)and like it said here, it was performed twice a day at 2 hour intervals and upon removal of the tube most of us would be subject to vomiting and lose all nutrition anyway that they tried to provide and put us into severe dehydration . Respect! Freedom feels better but fighting injustice on the Frontline is what makes a difference for both sides of the walls, we get people who made mistakes come home and be productive members of society instead of becoming slaves to the system that is still just slavery with a different name.....

It looks so traumatic even though you volunteered to do it, and had a crew you had some level of trust with.
To have this done when one is purposefully fasting, which is destroying a segment of their autonomy, also done by people who do not care about your consent, your pain etc, who you have no trust of, and who you fear, must be 100x more traumatic.
I can't imagine the trauma.
I've had an endoscopy and it was stressful but I was drugged up, it's going to be nothing like this...

Mos Def is way tougher than I was.

Nearly 10 years ago I contracted a severe illness that put me in ICU for close to a month and in the hospital burn unit for 4 more months. As a medical treatment, I was fed through a naso-gastric tube (aka force feeding or enteral feeding). In the hospital, the tube is left in place for weeks at a time. Overall, I had to go through having the tube installed 4 times. I was given a medication intended to induce amnesia each time but it did not work; I have vivid memories (and flashbacks) of each procedure.

It is painful and incredibly frightening, even though as a patient, I knew my medical team was trying to help me and would not subject me to anything that would harm me. To think of going through that at the hands of hostile strangers... I have no words, I have no words.

I’ve had this done 9 times, due to chronic pancreatitis. I read a medical review that says it’s the most painful procedure that’s done consciously.
But my feeding tube was stay in and I had a pole with the feeding bags. My last one was in for 3 months, 3 weeks and my doctor watched me to go to 6 months.

Honestly, the people who were doing the procedure looked a little too ready to force it into him even more as he clearly began physically resisting it. They should have read his body language and stopped, not pushing his body down, restraining his arms and his head.
Sickening to see how they do this on a volunteer, can’t imagine how they do this for prisoners.

That actually happened to me at a doctor visit, no I wasn't being force fed food but it was a camera device threw my nose to check my throat for abnormalities causing soreness. this reminded me of that my nose actually started to bleed, I still don't know why it had to go threw my nose but I don't go to the doctor's often I should though, I'll be 40 next year.

I read Mohamedou Oulf Slahi's book about his experiences in Guantamo Bay and its harrowing and repugnant to think that this prison and its methods are sanctioned by the US. I applaud Yasiin Bey for even trying to put himself in the shoes of the people who go through this.

Real respect for this guy. Nasalgastric tubes are used on sedated or full unconcious people usually on medical procedures (I believe on inmates they do it like he did, which is awful and painful).

If you think he was 'acting' or exaggerating, he's not. I have Crohn's Disease, which often requires me to go through this procedure. Of all the things I've had to go through for test & treatments, having a tube inserted into my stomach via my nose is the one I dread the most. I fucking hate it, it is not only painful, it is such an unnatural/foreign feeling there simply is no word to describe the feeling.

I am tube fed/tpn dependent (iv nutrition) out of medical necessity. I have a surgical tube that goes straight into my abdomen now, but I am no stranger to nasal tubes, and, yes, they hurt like hell. I had to be sedated for every tube change after the first tube because they nicked a blood vessel in the process causing me to vomit up blood. He isn't exaggerating.

So many ignorant comments here. Yea, I've had it done in hospital too, but it's not the same if you're unwilling to accept the tube. Your stay in hospital is not comparable to a stay in gitmo.

People have them placed unwillingly whilst restrained in hospital too though (especially in the case of eating disorders) ...I personally feel kinda uncomfortable about this video :/ don't get me wrong - there's nothing I like about Guantanamo but using this in such an overdramatised fashion just doesn't sit right to me. God I've had more ng tubes than I could count. I was placing them myself as a child having been taught after initially having to be restrained the first time. I chose to place them myself after that. Being restrained and having tubes placed is horrible, and traumatic undoubtedly...but it happens for legitimate reasons all the time - I don't know, I guess I just think this is the wrong thing to be focussing on. There are far more disgusting things about the way Guantanamo bay detainees are treated and they are horrendous enough without being over dramatised to sway the emotions of the public in the way that this is.

I don't think anyone has a choice in a hospital if you need it they are going to do it regardless.. this procedure is usually done to save lives..it's not that painful but like anything else if you fight it will hurt..

As someone who had this done 3x a day for 2.5 years - including restraints like this on almost every occasion due to anorexia, this is a bit OTT… it’s unpleasant and it hurts, but it’s NOT this bad.

I work in healthcare where I have seen Nasogastric tubes placed in patients of all ages. I've only seen a couple people react this way, and the nursing staff call them drama queens. My little sister had one placed as a child and didn't react this ridiculously. He definitely dialed up the drama to make this seem more shocking. We cannot ethically let these prisoners die by starvation, so by them refusing to eat, this procedure was required.

Anyone who has gotten a covid test knows how much it burns when a thin swab is inserted in your nose for a few seconds. I cant imagine a long tube being forced into your nose for 2 hours.

@Kateri Golden After I broke my neck I didn’t eat for a month and a half and win I was able to again they had to put a camera at my nose and down to the back of my throat in order to watch me swallow to make sure I wouldn’t choke… It’s unpleasant but if you don’t struggle then it’s not unbearable

Mos Def; a brilliant rap artist, one of the all time greatest ever, super lyrical and inspiring music.. I was looking up for the track 'Mathematics' to show my partner, and came across this video in the related content.

I have seen before Christopher Hitchens undergoes a standard operation waterboarding, I recommend watching it but IMO this one was more effective in illustrating the point of how sadistic these procedures are. The raw emotion displayed here is powerful.

Much respect to you Mr. Bey for doing this and posting it, people really ought to know what it actually means to torture people - its one thing reading about it in news articles, but seeing it happen to someone makes it clear that what the governments are doing to detainees at these black sites is unconscionable and we should do everything possible to end it
