BAD
B.B. King; U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
Surrender
Dislocate
If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free, I'd lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
To let it go
And so to fade away
To let it go
And so, fade away

Wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake
I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they'd
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Bruised silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in bloodshot eyes

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
If I could, you know I would, if I could, I would
Let it go

This desperation
Dislocation
Separation, condemnation
Revelation in temptation
Isolation, desolation
Let it go

And so fade away
To let it go
And so fade away
To let it go
Oh now, and so to fade away

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
Wide awake

I'm not sleeping
Oh, no, no, no

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Bad" by U2 are open to interpretation, but it seems to describe a person who is struggling with addiction and a desire to escape it. The lines "If you twist and turn away, if you tear yourself in two again" suggest the physical and emotional pain that come with addiction. The singer wishes they could help the other person overcome their struggles, saying "If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind, leave this heart of clay, see you walk, walk away."

The second half of the song speaks to the despair and desperation felt by the addict, with lines like "This desperation, dislocation, separation, condemnation, revelation in temptation, isolation, desolation." The repeated phrase "Let it go, and so to fade away" could either refer to accepting defeat and fading away into addiction, or letting go and embracing a new life without it.

Overall, the song is a powerful representation of the struggles of addiction and the emotional toll it takes on individuals and their loved ones.

I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
I was under the waves
Before love rescued me
I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
Now I stand accused of the things I've said
Love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town
I used to make love under a red sunset
I was making promises I was soon to forget
She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
But I left her standing before love came to town
I ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue, I was dazing in a dream
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before love came to town
When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town
When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town
I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

I am An African and when I saw this rock band U2 acknowledge Black Music(through their album, Rattle and Hum) how it came to the USA and influenced the USA, through Gospel,Jazz,Rock'n'Roll,The Blues, I say U2 thank you at least acknowledging that it was the Black Community through Gospel that birthed Rock'N'Roll

Most musicians acknowledge it, and readily. Music business people, on the other hand, are shocked when anything bluesy or rootsy resonates with the public
