Don't Answer The Door (Parts 1
B.B. King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I don't wanna a soul,
Hangin around my house when I'm not home.
Oh, I don't want a soul, baby,
Hangin' around my house when I'm not home.
I don't want you to open the door for nobody, woman,
Oh, when you're home and you know you're all alone.

Your sister might wanna visit us,
But the little girl she talk too much.
If she just come by to visit us,
Tell her to meet us Sunday, Sunday, down at the church.
'Cause I don't want a soul, baby,
Hangin' around my house when I'm not at home.
Yes, I don't want you to open the door for nobody, baby,
Oh, when you're home and you know you're all alone.

Your mother might wanna visit us,
But you tell you mamma I get home bout the break a day.
And that's too late to visit anybody, baby,
So, tell you mamma to please, please, please stay away.
'Cause I don't want a soul, baby,
Hangin' around my house when I'm not at home.
Yes, I don't want you to open the door for anybody, woman,
Oh, when you're home and you know you're all alone.

You might feel a little sick, baby,
And you know you're home all alone,
I don't want the doctor at my house, baby,
You just suffer, suffer, suffer till I get home.
'Cause I don't want a soul, baby,
Hangin' around my house when I'm not at home.
Yes, I don't want you to open the door for nobody, woman,

Baby, when you're home and all alone.
Yeah!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to B.B. King's "Don't Answer The Door" express a sense of protectiveness over one's personal space and privacy. B.B. King advises his partner not to open the door for anyone, even if they are expected visitors, when he's not around. He expresses distaste for anyone lingering around his home when he's not there, claiming that he doesn't want anyone in his space. He even goes so far as to implore his partner to suffer through any illness they may have, without calling a doctor, until he gets home rather than inviting a stranger into their home.

The song also contains a warning about trusting others too easily. B.B. King seems to have had prior experiences with visitors who talk too much, namely his partner's sister. He advises his partner to direct her to meet them elsewhere, at the church, to avoid any unneeded conversation. In addition, the song reveals B.B. King's desire for autonomy and control. He wants absolute control over his space and who enters it, without any outside interference.

As a youngster growing up in the 50,s and 60,s my father had a blues Cafe, my mother would make fish dinners there, those were good times, and watching the old men get so drunk listening to the blues, they would grab their hankerchief and actually be crying,as I got older I begin to feel their pain

A group of us were having some drinks, playing music, and I decided to put this on. Not because I cared if anyone was interested but I wanted to hear it. Instantly everyone was enjoying it. Like King said, music is made for everybody to enjoy, and a musicians job is to put a smile on the listeners face. Such a great man, and so much feeling in his playing and singing. I miss him! R.I.P King.
