Happy Birthday Blues
B.B. King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby lights her cigarette
And takes a look around
She says that morning sun
Sure does get her down
Nothing else to see
Just to help her lose
Those happy birthday blues
Grandpa takes a drink of wine
And tells it like it was
Tells me all he wants to do
Is what everybody does
Say he'd give the world
For a little girl
Just to help him lose
Those happy birthday blues

Happy birthday blues
Happy birthday blues
Got to pay your dues
Those happy birthday blues

In and out and on and on
Everybody goes
And where the fun with finally stops
Everybody knows
Girls it's me and you
Doing what we do

Just one way to lose
Those happy birthday blues

Overall Meaning

The song "Happy Birthday Blues" by B.B. King is a melodious tale of people of all ages who feel down and blue on their birthdays. The song starts with Baby lighting a cigarette and feeling disappointed by the morning sun. She cannot find any thrill in the day because it is her birthday, and she is feeling the blues. In the next verse, Grandpa drinks wine and shares his feelings with King, explaining that he wants to do what everyone does, and he desires a little girl to make him happy on his birthday. The song features an element of sadness that stems from the fact that these people do not feel valued or loved on their birthdays. They are longing for companionship and somebody to uplift their mood on this special day.

Overall, "Happy Birthday Blues" depicts how sometimes birthdays are not meaningful or exciting for people as they expected them to be. It highlights how the absence of someone special can create a sense of hopeless longing and deep sadness that overrides any feeling of happiness. B.B. King's voice blends with the guitar melodies to create a poignant mood that captures the essence of people who have the blues on their birthdays.

I've seen B. B. King so many times over the years, since the 1960s, and he remains the epitome of a gentleman and great entertainer! Not many like him (nor will there be) & it's why he's still loved and revered by so many! He's paid the cost to be the boss! :)

I remember every year for everyone's birthday my grandad played this record and we jammed in the house. My grandma still has it somewhere in a collection, sad that both B.B and grandad are gone, though. R.I.P Riley B. King and my dear grandpa, definitely our most favorite song.
