I Know The Price
B.B. King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you are lovin' somebody's lover
Then you gotta understand
Take a chance and love her
Love her when you can
That's how it is, I know the price
'Coz I'm payin' the bill

Oh, lovin’ somebody's girl
Keeps you mighty, mighty uptight
Seems the one that you love
Go somewhere else at night
That's how it is, I know the price
'Coz I'm payin' the bill

To make it some one lover
You gotta be mighty weak or strong
Knowin' in the midnight hour
When you're all alone
Now the one you're loving
Is takin' care of business at home

Oh, lovin' somebody's lover
You have to take what you can
I swear it makes you feel sometimes
Like a handout from the welfare man

That's how it is, I know the price
'Coz I'm payin' the bill

Overall Meaning

In B.B. King's song "I Know The Price," the lyrics tell the story of a man who is in love with someone who is already taken. He understands the price of loving somebody's lover, but he cannot help how he feels. He knows that he has to take the chance to love her when he can, even if it means that he will have to pay the price in the end.

The song's lyrics also touch on how loving somebody's girl can make a person feel uptight and insecure, especially knowing that the one they love is seeing someone else at night. The singer understands that to become someone's lover, a person must be both weak and strong, and that it takes a toll on one's mental and emotional state. He knows that he will be left alone at times while the person he loves is taking care of their business at home.

Overall, B.B. King's "I Know The Price" is a heartfelt song that speaks to the struggles of loving someone who is already taken. It reflects the emotions and pain that come with this situation, as well as the acceptance of the price that must be paid for loving somebody's lover.

Really dig this tune - why is it so hard to find?

@Ron Levy It's a shame. I'm going to write to my contact at Universal and see if anything comes out of it :)

@progmeup I know........too bad. Oh well..........

@Ron Levy The problem is actually that this album has never been released on CD! There was apparently a digital release with the iTunes edition of "Ladies & Gentlemen... Mr BB King" but I can't find it anymore. Hey, even the AllMusic review is about the 1988 compilation of the same name, which only has half of the original album.

Never promoted in the R&B market? Would've been good on any Southern or ghetto jukebox.....should've faded at the end. There's good rhythmic counterpoint, but the mix is off IMHO. Willie Mitchell should've mixed it.
