B.B. King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey baby, you ain't treating me right
You go off everyday and don't come home til night

[Chorus]
That ain't the way to do it [Repeat: x3]
That ain't the way to get along

Well i'm pickin' you up and takin' you to my house
Now you're up and you're treating me like a mouse

[Chorus]

Well i takin' you into my house and did everything i could
You told everybody in the neighborhood

[Chorus]

Well if you got a little woman and she won't treat you right
Beat her three times a day and whoop her a little at night

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In B.B. King's song That Ain't The Way To Do It, we see the singer expressing his disgust towards his love interest. He feels unappreciated and disrespected as his partner goes off every day and comes home only at night. He addresses her in the opening lines as he asks her to take notice of her actions and how it affects their relationship negatively. The chorus reinforces his message to her as he emphasizes that they cannot continue to live the way they have been. He urges her to do better and not continue handling their relationship this way.

In the second verse, he takes action and decides to pick her up and take her to his house. However, his attempts to change their dynamic are not successful, as he laments that she is now treating him like a mouse. The chorus repeats again to drive home his displeasure towards her behavior.

The third and final verse takes an unexpectedly violent turn, as the singer advises men on how to deal with women who do not treat them right. He suggests that if a man has a woman who is disrespectful and does not treat him right, he should "beat her three times a day and whoop her a little at night." The final chorus repeats this message, leaving the listener to ponder the ethical implications of such advice.

First blues tune I ever learned to sing, after 40 years of just playing guitar. And, a slightly different version off an early collection called "Do the Boogie". Thanks
