Key To The Highway
B.B. King & Ensemble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got the key to the highway,
Billed out and bound to go
I'm gonna leave here running people
Because walking is most too slow

I'm going back, to the border
Before they put up the fence
Where I'm better known
Because you haven't done nothing baby,
Except drove a good man away from home

When the moon peeks over the mountains
Baby I'm gonna be on my way
I'm gonna roam this mean old highway
Until the break of day

So give me one, give one more kiss baby
Before I go,
'Cause when I leave this town
I won't be back no more, no more

So give me one more kiss baby
Give me one more kiss baby before I go,
'Cause when I leave this town
I won't be back no more, no more

So goodbye, goodbye baby
Baby I must, I must, I must say goodbye
Cause I'm a roam this mean old highway

Until the day I die
I'm gonna do this til the day I die folks

Overall Meaning

The song "Key to the Highway" is a classic blues standard, originally recorded by blues legend Charlie Segar in 1940. B.B. King and Eric Clapton recorded their version in 2000 for their collaborative album "Riding with the King." The song is about a man who is leaving town and hitting the road, armed with the key to the highway. He's had enough of the place where he's been living and is ready to explore new surroundings. The song is about the lure of the open road and the sense of adventure that comes with it.

The lyrics paint a picture of a man who is restless and ready to move on. He's tired of the people and the place where he's been living, and he's ready to hit the road and see what else is out there. The key to the highway is a symbol of freedom and independence – with it, the man can go wherever he wants and explore new possibilities. The lyrics are full of vivid imagery, painting a picture of the open road and the adventures that await.

We just saw him in Columbus, Ohio tonight 10/0/09. His shows are so much more than just playing music. Part comedy, part blues, part history lesson, part legendary guitar and tone and complete entertainment. Long live B.B. King!
