Upside Down
B.H. Edwards Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say you've got some very excellent news
You say I'm going to die, when you tell me
And in my way I will
But though your words will kill
I know you'll think that I don't seem to care

It's just because my frown, is upside down
It's upside down, my frown, is upside down

I'm happy that your happy this is well
Your anger makes me mad but you can't tell
Believe me when I say, I'm with you in my private way
And though you think I'm trying to blow you off

Its only that my frown, is upside down
It's upside down, my frown
Is upside down, my frown's upside down

You'd probly like to give me a smack
But there's somethin about my face
That always keeps you comin back

When I'm with you the landscape goes all weird
Black is white n'the rainbow has a beard
Are your eyes playing tricks
Or should you get your glasses fixed?
Well I don't think your eyesight is to blame

The problem is my frown, is upside down
It's upside down, my frown
Is upside down, my frown's upside down

It's upside down, my frown
Is upside down, my frown's upside down

Overall Meaning

B.H. Edwards's song "Upside Down" presents an intriguing perspective on emotional expression in a relationship. The lyrics seem to be addressed to someone who has shared "excellent news" that, as the song progresses, is revealed to be an announcement of the singer's impending death. However, the singer doesn't react with the expected sadness or fear - instead, they claim that "though your words will kill [...] my frown is upside down". This suggests that the singer is choosing to conceal their true emotions, perhaps to protect their partner from feeling guilty or upset. Throughout the song, the singer repeats the refrain "my frown is upside down" to emphasize the disparity between their external expression and their internal experience.

As the song develops, it becomes clear that the relationship between the singer and their partner is fraught with conflict. The partner's "anger makes me mad", but the singer simultaneously claims to be "happy that you're happy". The singer also notes that their appearance seems to be having a strange effect on their partner - "there's somethin about my face that always keeps you comin back". This suggests that there may be an element of power dynamics at play - the partner may be attempting to assert control over the singer by delivering the news of their death, but the singer is resisting by refusing to show the expected emotions.

Overall, "Upside Down" presents a complex and nuanced exploration of emotional expression in a difficult relationship. The singer's refusal to conform to expected patterns of behavior is presented as both an act of defiance and a demonstration of compassion toward their partner.

Sweet but crazy!  Perhaps something got lost in translation.  Slavic cultures have ways of thinking that seem quite foreign to people in the western countries.  I would know this because my mother was 100% Slavic.  It took me years to understand how brilliant she was because I, like my siblings, was raised totally in American culture.  She first learned to speak, read & write English when she married my very-American father, who taught English grammar as a tutor; as I remember her, she was the most knowledgeable person I ever knew about grammar, spelling, punctuation & inflection, better than my father!  It's a personally deepening experience to be exposed to the other margins of human behavior & expression If one is open to accepting what is strange.

On a more shallow note, I wonder what Uldus looks like without the make-up!

Your mother sounds like an awesome lady :)

SIMKINETICS

emerald764 Yeah, that's why I loved her.  If she was still alive, she'd be 106 years old.  She turned out to be a pretty talented mother who was down-to-earth & often wise in surprising ways.  Thanks!

How can anyone look at that woman and think she's past due date? She's thriving!

Lapticul

when she said that she was begging for comments like yours... everybody knows it's not true, even the russians that are not 40-50-60 year old.

For non-Russian speakers: the word irony has a slightly different meaning to it in Russian.
