On The Road
B.J Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Roads
Nameless roads
Where you takin' me to
Now we're movin' into country
These boots ain't traveled through
And I'm losing all my heart
By going on
But the point of no returning
Is long gone

Roads
Hungry roads
Something feels mighty wrong
First you came to own my body
Now you're out to get my soul
And I can't tell which is you
And which is me
And I only have the hope of feeling free

Everybody's calling out directions
Telling me which way I oughta go
Now I never had a mind
That took too kindly to direction
But lately I don't know
I just don't know

Roads
Lonesome roads
Are you anywhere bound
Does a man have to admit he's lost
Before he can be found
When the miles keep rolling by
And he's scared and he don't know why
Does he come right out and shout
I need a friend

Or does he let his roads
Just take him to the end

Overall Meaning

In B.J. Thomas’ song “On The Road,” he sings about being on an unknown path, both physically and emotionally. He wonders where the roads he's traveling will take him, as he's moving into country his boots have never traveled through. He acknowledges that he's losing his heart and feels like something is wrong. He's struggling to discern his own thoughts and emotions from those of the person who owns his body and now seems to be after his soul as well.

In the chorus, he notes how lost he's feeling, as people offer him directions, but his mind isn't suited to taking direction, which seems to be compounding his confusion and uncertainty. The roads he is traveling are lonely, and he can't tell where he's going or what will become of him. The song highlights the struggles of finding oneself on an uncertain path and the disorientation that comes with it.

That’s funny. I just watched a Canadian bike rider filming a couple enjoying one another on the trail. Hey, it could be a husband and wife enjoying each other on a secluded trail. More power to them. I’m guessing this topic is now on my feed 🤦🏼
