After 1974's Calabasas he landed at Warner Bros. to issue We Be Sailin' a year later. Down to the Station, from 1977's Lost Feeling, was his last chart hit, and after 1980's Lifeline his recording career was over. Sadly, Stevenson died on April 28, 1988 shortly after undergoing heart valve surgery; he was just 38 years old. Since his death, Poor David's Pub in Dallas has held an annual songwriting competition in his memory.
Author Jan Reid devotes a chapter to Stevenson in his book The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock, dubbing him "The Voice".
In mid 1996, Stevenson's hit My Maria reached the charts again when it was covered by the country duo Brooks & Dunn, for whom it became a three-week #1 country hit.

I don’t really know where this is going
The letters you and I express my gratitude
I’ll write you every day so you’re sure
Maybe I’m a fool lost without a clue
Romantically distressed and it’s showing
I know my lover waits cause she’s patient too
She will soon be mine and I’ll be hers
My mind is stuck on you
To whom do I address?
Whom do I pursue?
Here’s my love, here’s my word
Here’s my letter, for what it’s worth
I would cross the world just to cross your mind
Deliver my love baby, in due time
Deliver my love baby, in due time
The lyrics to B.W. Stevenson's song "In Time" convey a sense of longing and uncertainty. The singer doesn't know who they're writing to or where their relationship is headed. However, they express their gratitude through the letters "you and I" and vow to write every day. The singer admits to feeling like a fool and being romantically distressed. They are waiting for their lover, who is patient, to be theirs.

This song reminds me of a time in 1976 when my brother and I was following each other along the southern coast I broke off in Pascagoula Miss. To work in a shipyard and my brother Billy continued on to southern Florida to build houses and meet his once wife. Í was sad :(
