Early in the Morning
B. B. King & Van Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Early in the morning and I can't get right
Had a little date with my baby last night
Now it's early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Well it's early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Now it's early in the morning
And I ain't got nothing but the blues

Went to all the places where we used to go
Went to your house but you don't live there no more
Now it's early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Well it's early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Early in the morning
And I ain't got nothing but the blues

Went to your friend's house but she was out
Knock on your father's door and he began to shout Get out there boy
Early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Early in the morning
And I ain't got nothing but the blues

Went to Dooky Chase to get something to eat
Waiter looked at me and said 'You sure look beat'
Now it's early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Early in the morning (Early in the morning)
Well it's early in the morning
And I ain't got nothing but the blues
Well it's early in the morning
And I ain't got nothing but the blues

Well it's early in the morning
And I ain't got nothing but the blues

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song tell the story of a man who had a date with his lover the night before and now, early in the morning, he feels lost and empty because she is no longer with him. He visits all the places they used to go- her house and her friend's house- but she is nowhere to be found. Even when he tries to ask for help from her father, he is turned away. The man ends up at Dooky Chase, a restaurant where he is met with pity from the waiter who notices his state of distress.

The theme of the song is heartbreak and the feeling of loss. The man is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his lover is gone and left him feeling empty. This is reflected in the repetition of the phrase "early in the morning" which highlights the idea of starting a new day without her. The lyrics are simple and to the point, yet they hit close to home for anyone who has experienced the pain of a breakup.

In case anyone is looking for lyrics for this particular version of the song I think I've put up kinda-right lyrics together:

One drink of wine,
Two drinks of gin.
Pretty young got me
In the shape I'm in.

Come and see me early in the morning,
Just about the break of day.
Want to see me hug my pillow
Where my baby used to lay?

I pass by the juke joint,
Look through the door.
She's doing the boogie-woogie
In the middle of the floor.

Come and see me early in the morning,
Just about the break of day.
Want to see me hug my pillow
Where my baby used to lay?

Oh my baby loves me
She really understands
I Can’t see her when I want to
Got to see her when I can

One drink of wine,
Two drinks of gin.
Pretty young got me
In the shape I'm in.

Enjoy and if you think there are mistakes, don't hesitate to correct them!

Respect from Van Morrison. More than 'love'. More than affection. Most, if not all, of the good things in life emanate from a sense of respect. And all respect begins with self-respect. RIP B.B. King.
