At Rendezvous Records in Los Angeles, the house band had a hit record with a rocked-up version of "In The Mood", credited to the Ernie Fields Orchestra. Band members Earl Palmer, Rene Hall and Plas Johnson then came up with the idea of taking the same approach to a piece of classical music, and approached pianist Jack Fina who had successfully arranged a swing version of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumble Bee" - as "Bumble Boogie" - in 1946. Producer Kim Fowley instructed pianist Ernie Freeman to use Fina's arrangement, but recorded him on two tracks, one using a grand piano for the rhythm part, whilst the other featured a doctored upright with thumb tacks attached to the hammers. Credited to B. Bumble and the Stingers, "Bumble Boogie" went to # 21 on the Billboard charts in 1961.
A teen band from Oklahoma, who had played no part in the recording itself, were recruited to handle promotion and public appearances. Their names were given as Fred Richard, Ron Brady, and the unlikely-sounding William "Billy" Bumble.
The follow-ups, "Boogie Woogie" and "Caravan", flopped, and the record company lost interest. Fowley then secured the copyright to an arrangement of Tchaikovsky's "March of the Wooden Soldiers", and recorded it on the Del-Rio label with H. B. Barnum, under the name Jack B. Nimble and the Quicks. Producer Rod Pierce at Rendezvous thought that they could do a better version with their own band, and recorded a new arrangement with Earl Palmer (drums), Tommy Tedesco (guitar), Red Callender (bass), and pianist Al Hazan (aka Ali Hassan) taking the place of the indisposed Freeman. Released as "Nut Rocker" in February 1962, the record went to # 23 in the US and # 1 in the U.K.
However, despite a touring band being formed to promote them, further B. Bumble and the Stingers recordings failed to match the success of "Nut Rocker", and the musicians who played on the hits continued their own careers on sessions and in touring bands.
A version of "Nut Rocker" was recorded in 1972 by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Least wise they tell me I did
I sure had a wonderful time last night
Really blew my lid
Went to a party, I recollect that much
But after four or five, you know I lost my touch
I sure had a wonderful time last night
Least wise they tell me I did
I had a whale of good time last night
Really got myself some kicks
I sure had a wonderful time last night
Took me right back to the sticks
Between that hillbilly band and old Uncle Zeke
And that new atomic beverage that they called "Sneaky Pete"
I sure had a wonderful time last night
Least wise they tell me I did
Sure had a wonderful time last night
Don't know how I got to bed
Sure had a wonderful time last night
Come here, feel this lump on my head
They say I got kinda noisy
And started to shout
Four big bouncers grabbed me
But I threw them out
I sure had a wonderful time last night
Least wise they tell me I did
Sure had a wonderful time last night
Really had myself some fun
Sure had a wonderful time last night
Didn't get home until about half past one
You know I'd like to take you with me the next time I go
But where the heck was it?
Sure would like to know
But I sure had a wonderful time last night
The lyrics of B. Bumble & The Stingers's song Night Time Madness portrays the story of a wild night of partying, where the singer had so much fun that he blacked out and cannot remember anything. He starts off by admitting that he had a wonderful time last night and that he probably blew his lid. He recollects going to a party, but after a couple of drinks, he lost his touch and cannot remember anything. The singer adds that he had a great time and really got himself some kicks, and this feeling is emphasized by the hillbilly band and the new atomic beverage that they called "Sneaky Pete."
The singer then goes on to describe some of the mishaps of the night, such as getting a lump on his head and becoming loud and unruly. Even though four bouncers grabbed him, he was able to throw them out, indicating that his night was one of pure madness. Despite his forgetfulness and the mishaps, the singer concludes the song by saying that he had a wonderful time last night and would love to take the listener to the next party, if only he could remember where it was.
In summary, the lyrics of Night Time Madness describe a wild night of partying and the singer's inability to remember anything about it. The song celebrates the joys of letting loose and having a good time, no matter the consequences.
