Summer '85 Classic. I was 11 years old and we used to play when we were warming up for softball practice. Our coach thought it would be soothing to relax to and just play(we would listen to this and "Sugar Free" by Juicy, I remember this like it was yesterday). He was right!!!! This group is the best. Their music is beautiful and timeless yet you never hear of them. I have three of their four albums including Genie and its my favorite of the three. I was only 7 years old when Genie was released but I still remember hearing "Dreamer" on the radio while riding in the car with my Aunt. Sadly, Genie was to be their last album as creator Fred Petrus was murdered in 1986 and lead singer Curtis Hairston died of kidney failure in 1996. R.I.P. Curtis Hairston and Fred Petrus.

This song and album was produced by Kae Williams. The reason it sounds so much like a Jam and Lewis production is because Kae Williams was also a member of the group Change. When Jam and Lewis produced the track for Change, "Change of Heart", that's when Kae learned how to produce that kind of music. The main backdrop of course being the classis Roland 808 drum machine that drives the hypnotic rhythim of the track. Both the instrument and vocal arrangement are flawless.

I happened upon this song.... and 'MY OH MY'...what a wonderful, beautiful, and soul emotional soothing song.  The music has a S.O.S. Band feel to it. Listening to it is so enriching....the 80's era rule! Immersed in the sounds, I can't help but point-up the fact that Houston radio personalities and club D J's, for so long, have had / still have their 'heads in the sand' as the proverbial saying goes when it comes to showcasing / playing quality music from around the country. The aforementioned are stuck...and still stuck to this day with playing the same old tunes- over and over again! That said I betcha a whole block or two of Rap "Urban Thug Noise / Pole and Pose Dance Music" or a half a dozen kitchens or more of Zydeco "Pot and Pan Music" that this song has never been played in the Houston area- on air or in the clubs…lol.

Curtis was one of the most underrated vocalist for his time. The purity in his tone and delivery was actually very much on par with Luther Vandross. Yes, I said it and will stand by that. The only difference was Curtis did not have the label resources for marketing and promotions. He was truly a vocal genius. Not to mention he arranged all of the background harmonies himself. RIP my friend. You are really missed.

Up tonight after a small performance here in Philadelphia As my family is sleep I'm in tears feeling sad and happy at the same time listening to one of my friends who passed away some years ago. His name was Kae Williams who was responsible for so many hits from Philadelphia. Kae produced my record Boss of the Bass and he was a perfectionist as you can hear on this recording here.
