@@PetroicaRodinogaster264 My intention in pointing out the equivalent was to show the kindness of the detective as $125 is a big chunk of change to give to someone for a purchase for the office.

It’s a reflection of the character as a whole - the type of person he is. He’s not a cheapskate, and isn’t selfish. He’s also not a sucker, which is why he makes sure to tell the junior man that he expects change.

Re: overspending - Back then we also didn’t have Targets, Walmarts, and Dollar Stores at every other intersection. Most items were made in the US, and prices reflected that. As a child my mom couldn’t buy me an outfit for $10 ($32 dollars in 1982 money) every week, or a cabbage patch kid which sold for $25 (equivalent of $80 today). There were loads of kids my age whose parents couldn’t afford an equivalent $80 doll, or only got new clothes once or twice a year. In today’s age there are very few children who want for a gift priced less than $100. They still exist of course, but the majority of kids want for nothing.

Parents and adults knew the value of money, and most only bought necessities.

As I’m on a tangent, I really fear what will happen when GenZ hits retirement age - the people in power will have grown up thinking they can have anything they want. That’s going to be really dangerous I think.

What a great cast is always assembled in these Rendells. Superb portrayal of Eddie by Michael Fitzgerald.

Just found Ruth Rendell . So happy. Love British Stories. I especially love Agatha. But find Ruth to be much more deeper. Thanks so much.

That's exactly why I have my kitty Surya 🐈. He does a lot of odd things that happen around the house. And when I talk to myself I tell people that I must have been talking to the cat!🤗

@gloriamontgomery6900

Kitties can do amazing things. My cat , Dickens, would occasionally knock the phone off the hook when it rang . Once, my sister called and heard this unearthly sound on the phone when it was picked up. My cat had an unusual meow. Dickens had, apparently, “answered’ the phone
