Doctor Who
BBC National Orchestra of Wales Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're alone, silence is all you see
When you're alone, silence is all you'll be
Give me your hand and come to me

When you are here, music is all around
When you are near, music is all around
Open your eyes, don't make a sound
Let in the shadow, let in the shadow
Let in the light of your bright shadow

Let in the shadow, let in the shadow
Let in the light of your bright shadow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of BBC National Orchestra of Wales's song Doctor Who refer to the experience of being alone and the power of someone's presence to change that experience. The first two lines of the verse talk about the overwhelming silence that one experiences when alone. These lines create a sense of isolation and loneliness. However, the chorus gives the listener hope that they can find a way out of that isolation. The chorus is full of music, encouraging the listener to open their eyes and let music in. It's a call for the listener to connect with the orchestra, with the people around them, and to draw strength from those connections.

The following lines are a call to action. It's a plea for the listener to let go of their fear, to let go of their self-doubt, and to embrace the world around them - both light and dark. The repetition of the phrase "Let in the shadow, let in the light of your bright shadow" emphasizes the importance of embracing all aspects of our lives, good and bad, light and dark. It reminds us that through embracing the light, we can shine a light on the dark as well.

1:05 I remember watching "Utopia" in Series 3 and then when it ended and the outro song came on, they had hidden it in the song all along... It was only when they increased the percussion that I heard it... The drumming... the persistent drumming...
