Dear UCTV, could you help me understand these two issues: At 27:42 Mr Lustig doesn't mention that between 1-3 servings a day, fruit juice is not worsening obesity, because the graph is in negative numbers. Which would fit very well with the saying "the dose makes the poison" (at least in German we say that). He's right about a fatty liver, but he doesn't interpret the column chart / bar graph completely (but seems to cherry pick the last two negative charts).

The second issue I have is: that he also doesn't talk about eating fruit (outside of fruit juice). People could easily concluce "I'll stop eating fruit now because fructose is deadly", although an apple might just be as harmless as juice, when the amount of it is moderate (also, fruit has los of vitamins and I'm confused he doesn't say one word about that)... Even if noone concludes this, it unnecessarily demonizes fruit like apples, pears, bananas.

Aside from that, thank you for giving us the whole movie for free.

@@NoNameArtist89 (1:14:53) When you eat a fruit raw, you're eating the fiber with the fruit which helps give you the satiety signal, telling you to stop eating. The fiber also suppresses your insulin (good or bad I can't say). The problem with juice is that all of the fiber is taken out, which increases the fructose's intake per second (juice is more concentrated), but also in the amount of times you drink it, because the satiety signal is delayed. This means that children would end up drinking up more fructose. So to address the first issue. Looking at the far end of the chart is reasonable in my opinion for the reason that the fiber is taken out, removing a critical satiety signal to stop drinking. To address the second issue, (22:05) he shows a comparison of a normal diet eating fruit and vegetables in contrast to a normal diet. Due to the previous diet usually not having health concerns, it's safe to say a fruit and vegetable diet is safe.

@@DericHuynh-gw4bb Ok, satiety signal is a point. For me personally, however, it doesn't remove the "trust issue" that came up with me for his overall interpretation of this graph. Cherrypicking the last two charts to "give evidence" for how fructose is bad, is just not good/not professional; it should have been interpreted completely, especially because between less servings a day, it seems to be correlated to less obesity, which collides with his main point. Fruit is not a demon, but he acts a little like it is. It is good if people are passionate, but cherrypicking data is a temptation each professional can withstand. My opinion.

@@NoNameArtist89 The stats argue that Fruit Juice specifically is very bad. I would argue that fruit (not juiced) is also still relatively not that good. I'm not talking black and white, its on a sliding scale. Yes, you can and do get vitamins from fruit, which is good. You also get fiber which helps alleviate some of the problems of fructose, but you still get the fructose/sucrose which is not optimal. This would make fruit (in my opinion) in the middle range of healthiness. You probably won't get obese from it, nor sick, but it's technically better that you eat dark leafy greens (although there's diminishing returns).

Now to address the negative(?) correlation of the graph. It's obviously positively correlated, you can just look at it and you can see it increase when more juice is served. Of course, you're worried more about the negative bar in the 1-3 servings range. I went to the original research paper this was pulled from, which you can find by googling the citation in the bottom left corner of the video. The BMI Z score on the y-axis is the standard deviation of a persons body mass index (BMI) from their age/ethnic group. You can then infer that a negative bar means they're becoming less fat relative to the average of their age/ethnic group. A positive bar means that they're becoming more fat relative to that group. It is RELATIVE. Not absolute. Because this is a study of obesity, in a time of obesity. The average is expectedly quite high in absolute terms, which means that moderation of their juice intake will result in becoming less fat relative to their peers, if their peers on average drink more than they do. Through this logic, you can come to the conclusion that the average peer in their group drinks between 3-4 servings of juice every day. If the child drank less than that, their BMI would be lower relative to the ones who stayed the same, which results in a negative BMI Z score. This is reasonable if a serving is a 200ml cardboard juice box, as 3 to 4 (3.5) servings is 2.9 cups. I personally drank 1 cup a day from the tropicana-like 2.6L bottles when got home when I was little, not including the juice box(es) I brought to school. Lower than average, but I'm also skinny so it correlates regardless.

TLDR: The y-axis is relative to the average of every child of the same age outside of the study. Because the average is quite high in modern times, it basically means that the children that were actively moderated just lost weight relative to their fatter peers, which reflects through the negative bar chart.

I stopped eating sugar and drinking soda the weekend before Thanksgiving 2020. I started out at 212.8 pounds. I am down to 188.2 pounds, and I feel great. My doctor told me my blood sugar was at the level to be classified as a type 2 diabetic. That did it. I knew I had to change my diet. Sugar was my drug of choice. I have had issues with joint pain for years. I have arthritis, and being overweight for years, and the sugar made it worse. After stopping eating sugar, and losing the weight, my joints have stopped hurting. My mind is clear. I was having issues concentrating. Now I don't. I work 12 hour shifts. I used to feel wiped out by the end of my shift. Now I don't. My wife and I have started keto. She has gone from 235 down to 217. Her joint pain has stopped too. Sugar is poison. It's also addictive. It's literally killing people. Something must be done. Processed foods are formulated to be addictive. Eating healthy is expensive. Eating unhealthy is cheap. That's why poor people are overweight more than people who aren't poor. This has to change. Our society is being destroyed by sugar addiction. All kids should watch this video, as well as adults. Money is all that matters to the powers that be. Our health means nothing. Take control of your health people. It can be done. DO IT!!!!!

My Uncle lived a very healthy life. He never ate Sugar, never ate Fast Food, never drank Alcohol, never Smoked, never took Drugs. He also went to the Gym daily. One day as he was just leaving the Gym, some guy came up to him and stabbed him multiple times. He was rushed to the Hospital and as he lay dying in the Ambulance, his last words to the Paramedic was: "F*ck I have wasted my life being healthy. I wish I knew what KFC or a Milkshake tasted like." Knowing I’m overweight because of a chemical imbalance in my brain rather than because I’m weak and lazy is such a revelation. So much easier to avoid a food that you know is going to chemically make you more hungry than just avoiding it because it’s high in calories. Found this video 15 days into keto, and I’m so much less hungry already. I’m down 33lbs……but knowing these sugars trick my brain makes them far less appealing…..before on diets I felt I was depriving myself of delicious foods…..knowing I’m depriving myself of delicious poison makes it far easier.

He also uses emotionally charged words like telling you how sugar is poison or that these things horrendous, or the Coca-Cola conspiracy. I just came back from a trip to Oaxaca where food is outstanding, real food. I ate A LOT, however, I lost weight, and experienced a sense of deep well being. I came back to the "civilized" world and I went to do some groceries, but left the store empty handed because it is evident all the food is so tainted I can hardly call it food at all. I once stopped eating sugar for a 21 days, at first it was a hard thing for me, then my brain, my body lost weight and it felt so good, no sadness, no low stamina. I mean, my brain remembered things that I did when I was 2 years old.

I still eat sugar, but I’m way too careful now.

I just graduated from Dietetics and Nutrition and I was not taught about how bad fructose is not until I took my internship in a Dialysis center and I had to do my research and then I was able to watch many presentations about liver and kidney diseases and the prevalence of obesity, it came always to high fructose diets. It really pains me to see parents feeding their children juice, which have very little fruit. I watched this even though a 6 years old. I loved it. Thank you. Loved every second of it, and it’s amazing how a good teacher makes so much of a difference in understanding something. I was binge watching Andrew Huberman’s YouTube channel during this insanely long 2-month lockdown that happened accidentally in Shanghai. In one of his videos he mentioned Robert Lustig and I traced all the way to this video. This video and a bunch of others scared the hell out of me since basically all my family members have some kind of metabolic syndrome (Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, high uric acid, hypertension) and not all of them are obese. Now I finally know that root cause of these metabolic diseases is the increase in percentage of sugar and processed food intake. Immediately after watching this video, I got rid of all my processed food and sugar in my diet. (which is easy during the lockdown but very hard after the lockdown, because sucrose is ingrained in the Shanghainese food culture) It’s been around 1 week and I noticed a dramatic improvement in my teeth. I no longer develop calculus on my teeth even if I reduced my frequency of brushing to once a day. And I feel much better psychologically. Thank you for all that information. I wish I have watched this video when I was in middle school. (Because that was the time for me to start eating more sugar and processed food.) I always knew sugar and processed food are bad, that’s what our teachers told us, but I never knew they were bad to this extent.

I can actually see the chickens and cows hanging out in the pasture, so I at least know the animals aren't being abused, and getting something much closer to a natural diet. It's a lot more expensive but I have a feeling the time of cheap meat will soon be over, what with the whole "eat zee bugs" signaling and "global supply chain problems", and the US government apparently now paying the big farming companies to NOT grow food, etc etc.

Do you like chicken soup? Just boil a whole chicken, with some coarsely chopped onion, celery, and carrots, and a tablespoon of thyme. You can also add a head of garlic if that's your thing. Bring up to a high boil for about 10 minutes, then lower to a simmer for 1-2 hours (I like 2 hours best). That gives you a bunch of good broth, chicken, and cooked vegetables, which I would recommend separating and freezing in lots of small containers. It's easy to thaw it by boiling the broth and dropping in the other stuff, so you don't need to use the microwave. That can take care of your dinner for about a week. (Soup and sandwiches!)

When I was young 60s and 70s I had serious problems dizziness problems with thinking and a bad temper. My mom fed us coke and cookies, cake etc. My mom met another mom who's kid had the same problems as I. This mom took her kid to a Dr in Chicago who at the time was the only Dr around that recognized the term hypoglycemia. He gave an 8 hr glucose tolerance test. So my mom took me to see him and found that I had hypoglycemia. It saved my life. Sugar was killing me. Since hypoglycemia was discovered it released many people from mental hospitals. If your brain doesn't have glucose or blood sugar it won't function properly. Hypoglycemia is a condition where the body produces too much insulin that takes all sugar and gets rid of it leaving you with no brain sugar.

Wish I could have watched this live. I've been diagnosed with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and after watching this program it all makes sense to me. All the grape powerades I've drank from Jack in the Box, and horrible fructose I've ate over the 35 years of my life have built up to the unhealthy body I have now. My uric acid levels are past safe levels, and I've had gout/kidney stones, and even have more kidney stones now. Going forward I'm going to change my diet, and avoid fructose like the poison it is to try to restore my life back to normal living conditions. I feel horrible for all the other people who can't help themselves, and these food companies are so vile, and corrupt all for the bottom dollar. Making the conditions you pay your doctor to treat you for.

I had a kidney stone this past year. I bought 100% cranberry juice and drank it. It was very strong and I couldn't any longer drink it without adding 100% grape juice. One day short of a week, I passed the kidney stone. I had also prayed about it. Years ago, my son had a kidney stone, at the hospital they told me to give him cranberry juice and I bought him cranberry juice mixed with another juice and he passed it. That's why I knew to drink cranberry juice.

March 6 2022, I stopped eating sugar, cereals, breads and stop drinking juice, I lost 7 pounds in one month. No he covers the fruit thing. The idea is that in nature fructose is found in plants with very high fiber density. The fiber inhibits the absorption of the fructose to a healthy rate. Refining the fructose without the fiber is what causes the negative feedback loop. All explained right here in this video you didn't watch.

I started to suffer from terrible debilitating vertigo, migraines, optical symptoms, memory loss, bad brain fog, neuropathology, night sweats, sleep disturbances, acid reflux and much more. Found out I had histamine intolerance. Later found out it's all linked to my gut - some streptococci were found there. I had to quit sugar and got onto a strict diet. @@angelmedina6486 thanks for your tips! My tips: I quit sugar whatsoever - no chocolate, no cookies etc, no fruits, no alcohol. I eat healthily - cooking at home most of the time. Once in a while when I am tired of bloody cooking I get delivery food - Indian Dahl, sushi or chicken. I drink smoothies that are more juices actually - spinach/kale, lime/lemon, cucumber - I got used to the taste. I don't crave sugar anymore. I think I still have the bloody streptococcus and will see in about 6 month after another poo tests. I was given antibiotics amoxicillin and I'm now in the middle of it. I just finished 1.week, now 1 week break and after that last week of taking it. Also, I drink home made bone broth every day made of chicken feet, parsnip, carrot, onion and garlic - cooked between 4-8hours depending how I feel. One big pot makes about 15 big caps so lasts about a fortnight. I'm tired of cooking, constantly thinking of what to eat but it's getting easier. But I'm on a diet for the second time. First time I was eating fruits (especially mango as that has low histamine) and my doctor was very disappointed as the poo test came back even worse than before the diet (more streps) so she said no fruits and gave me these antibiotics. Also, I do yoga, especially yin yoga helps me to get connected to my body and release any stress which I generally have little anyway. Also, I sleep.much better (all night through) now on the diet. Before I would wake up multiple times. I want to also work on my.addiction to use my smartphone all the time. I feel it's somehow connected to my health. I know sounds weird but maybe it doesn't. I'm on it literally 8 hors a day. It became like a drug to me. I guess sugar replaced by phone. I still have balance issues, sometimes vertigo but minimal, I don't have migraines anymore or just minimal, no night sweats..sometimes I get some other symptoms like.sole of my feet would get burning sensation and other neurological crap. It's all related to my gut. Right now I think I need to get rid of the bloody streps. I know they tend to be resistant to antibiotics. How long have you been battling this?

550 lbs from 215 lbs 3% body fat and hyper thyroidism destroyed me. 5 years ago I gave up all meat went Raw Vegan and cut out all sugar except for what the plants give me . I am now 240lbs and dropping to my goal weight of 175lbs. I wish I had come across this knowledge how bad sugar is earlier in my life. I am on OMAD now, cutting the refined sugar, carbs in all sorts and shapes(except healthy greens) and the processed foods wherever I can and living my best life. Thanks for sharing this video

Morning David . When you give up on sugar you will get the cravings for at least 6 weeks . I suppose like smoking . I found out I had type one diabetes at 17 - I’m now 51 and struggle every day . If we live on a diet all our lives based on sugar in food ,what chance do we give ourselves of just turning a corner one day . Good luck mate .🙏stay healthy

I have watched this several times. It was the first thing I found that changed my thinking and habits. I have cut carbs to 60-75 grams/daily and practice intermittent fasting. Nothing crazy or exotic. Full fat dairy (grass fed if available); eggs; good quality cheese and deli meats; non-starchy vegetables; grass fed butter; avocado; natural peanut butter; frozen berries; etc. I just don’t eat oatmeal or bread, unless it’s a half English muffin with a poached egg. And no cakes, cookies, or any of that stuff. That’s not to say I won’t have dessert for a special celebration, but that’s rare. The biggest thing about adding healthy fats is that you’re not hungry the way you are when you eat a lot of carbs. Time-restricted eating helps, too. I usually only eat between 10 am and 6 pm. It’s way easier than I thought it would be. Besides this lecture and Dr. Lustig’s books, I also recommend the documentary, “Fat Fiction.” It’s on YouTube for free with ads. Really good. Also Dr. Sarah Hallberg’s (RIP 😢) TED talk.

I just caught the point at 58:50 where he explains how high sugar causes high blood pressure due to Uric Acid blocking the creation of Nitric Oxide. For the guys out there, reduced Nitric Oxide can ALSO lead to erectile dysfunction so cut out the sugar!

Keep in mind that there are also things outside of cutting sugar that can increase Nitric Oxide production. My personal go-to right now is L-citruline which is converted efficiently in the body to both L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide. Another note is that you need at least 3-6 grams for it to be effective or 8 grams if your taking Citrulline malate.

So this is the reason why I felt healthier living in a rural area of the Philippines where chips, sodas and HFCS products are not available. I ate a lot of Sweet Potatoes and other fruits out there. I was 143 pounds that time.

But when I started to live in the City of Manila where Fast Food and Junk Foods are the easiest option, I started feeling weaker, lazier and out of focus. And now, I'm near 190 pounds.

Cutting "tasty bars" like Snickers and "sweet drinks" by 95% from my ration let me lose a ridiculous amount of weight and I wasn't even physically active.
Eating ~15-20 eggs per week, doing swimming (or something else intensive) will do marvels for health.

You're ruining your thyroid function and will rebound HARD and put all the weight back on in a few months to a year. When that happens, try eliminating dietary fat (especially PUFA) and smashing in as much fruit as you can stomach. Watch the weight drop off, your mood increase - and long-term :)

My point is that carbs are pretty much irrelevant and you can cut them massively as any food you eat which is rich in fat or protein will supply you with enough carbs on the side. Protein is truly the king of weight loss and that is the hardest part. Theoretically if you have enough protein and low carbs, there won't be a problem at all

4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!

I can confirm the uric acid part of this video. There was a time that i almost cut alcohol, like probably drinking just twice a month. However, I drank processed juice everyday. I had gout attacks almost everyday, it was baffling. Especially that I also avoid 'gouty foods'. The moment I decide to quit 'sugar', soda and other processed juices, this was more than 15 years ago, my gout leveled off to controlable levels. As a matter of fact, i rarely have an attack nowadays.
