The Thrill Is Gone
BB King & Bobby Blue Bland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong baby
You'll be sorry someday

The thrill is gone
The thrill gone away from me
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away from me
Although, I'll still live on
But so lonely I'll be

The thrill is gone
The thrill away for good
All the thrill is gone baby
It's gone away for good
Someday I know I'll be open armed baby
Just like I know, I know I should

I'm free now baby
I'm free from your spell
Free, free, free now baby
Baby, I'm free from your spell
Now that it's all over
All that I can do is wish you well

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away for good
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away for good
You know you done me wrong baby
You'll be sorry someday

The thrill is gone

I'm free from your spell, baby
Yes, I'm free oh I'm free from your spell

Overall Meaning

"The Thrill Is Gone" is a classic blues song that explores the themes of loss and heartbreak. The opening lyrics, "The thrill is gone, the thrill is gone away, the thrill is gone baby, the thrill is gone away" establishes the central idea of the song, which is that the singer's feeling of excitement and passion has disappeared from their relationship. The lyrics indicate that the person who the singer is addressing has "done them wrong," and that they will regret their actions.

The second verse continues this theme, with the singer stating that although they will live on, they will be "so lonely." The singer's feelings of abandonment and despair are further compounded by the line "the thrill is gone away for good." While the singer acknowledges that they will eventually be open to love again ("someday I know I'll be open armed baby"), they are currently experiencing the pain of rejection and loss.

The final verse of the song marks a shift in the singer's attitude towards their situation. They declare that they are "free from your spell," indicating that they have broken free from the emotional hold that the other person had over them. The repetition of the word "free" adds emphasis to this point, as does the line "now that it's all over, all that I can do is wish you well." The singer has moved on from their heartbreak and is prepared to leave the past behind.

My mother love both of these guys so much. She would talk about seeing BB king in concert when she was in college. I find myself loving their music so much now that she's gone maybe part of me is still trying to hold on to her. Both great legends rest in peace

When I was a kid and blues would be playing in the house I would tell my mom I didn't like it. She told me "You will, you haven't lived long enough." She was dead right!!!! I can listen all day sometimes and never miss a blues fest. Two of my favorites!
