If I Were A Boy
BC Jean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I were a boy
Even just for a day
I'd roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go

I'd drink beer with the guys
And chase after girls
I'd make out with who I wanted
And never get busted for it
'Cause they stick up for me

If I were a boy
I'd think that I'd understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear, I'd be a better man

I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

If I were a boy
I could just turn off my phone
And tell her that it's broken
So she thinks that I was sleeping alone

I'd put myself first
And make the rules as I go
'Cause I know that she'd be faithful
Waiting for me to come home (waiting for me)

If I were a boy
I think that I'd understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear, I'd be a better man

I'd listen to her
'Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

It's a little too late for you to come back
Say it's just a mistake, think God would forgive you like that
If you thought that I would wait for you, you thought wrong

But you're just a boy
You don't understand (you don't understand)
How it feels to love a girl
Someday, you wish you were a better man, oh

You don't listen to her
You don't care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
'Cause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

But you're just a boy

Overall Meaning

BC Jean's song 'If I Were A Boy' describes a dream of a girl who wishes to switch roles with a boy and have the freedom and power that often accompanies masculinity, if only for a day. She imagines herself waking up in the morning and seizing the opportunity to act according to her desires, instead of conforming to society's expectations of how a young lady should dress and act. She imagines drinking beer with guys, chasing after girls to make out with, and never getting caught for it. She also imagines being a better man if she were one, and empathetically understands the pain of girls who fall for boys who often take them for granted. She pledges to be a better person in her future relationships, and mocks the boy who hurt her before, proclaiming that it's too late for him to ask for forgiveness.

The song's lyrics express the struggles women face in a society that places stricter expectations on them than on men, particularly in heterosexual relationships. It highlights how men often take their female partners for granted, while women are left feeling undervalued, and taken for granted. Through this song, BC Jean is advocating for equity between genders, and expressing the benefits that come with it.

This actually gave me goosebumps. That's insane. She deserves a TONNE of recognition. Just discovered this in 2023.

I feellike she put way more emotion in this song then Beyonce did...which I guess makes sense since she wrote it.

+Rogenia Ngwayah (Rococopuff_5sosfam) Beyonce's version is prettier but this version has more emotion without a doubt

hello

I wouldn’t say Beyoncé’s version lacks emotion; rather that her emotions are different because she is at a different point in the relationship than BC Jean sang from in the original. I see and hear a tired, frustrated BEYOND tears and anger, resigned form of acceptance in Beyoncé’s version. By acceptance, I do NOT mean to imply that it’s okay to treat anyone that way OR that the woman is letting things continue as if the relationship were healthy. Having been through this scenario myself, I can easily imagine this song sung from several different viewpoints all held by the same woman, just at different points in time. In my own experience with this kind of pain,, I did eventually accept that I couldn’t change him, and from that point on, I made decisions for myself that were no longer based on the future I once hoped for with him. On on the way to that resigned acceptance, you can bet I felt everything in BC Jean’s version, too ... and now I am somewhere else entirely and feeling strong and much more myself than I ever felt when I was still with the cad.

Of course, I might simply be reading into this because I have unfortunately been there. ;-)
