A Tear Fell
BREWER TERESA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A fool am I, a fool am I, in love
A tear fell when I saw you in the arms of someone new
A tear fell when you left me all alone and feeling blue
A tear fell when you told me that your love was not for me
I didn't miss the teardrops but I miss you constantly
A fool am I, a fool am I, in love

The teardrops that you stepped on as you danced across the floor
Were crushed like my poor heart was when you walked out of my door
A tear fell when you told me that the flame in your heart died
Darlin', have I lost you like these teardrops from my eyes?
A fool am I, a fool am I, in love

A tear fell when you told me that your love was not for me

I didn't miss the teardrops but I miss you constantly
A fool am I, a fool am I, in love

Overall Meaning

In BREWER TERESA's song A Tear Fell, the lyrics speak of heartbreak and unrequited love. The singer expresses the pain they feel after seeing the person they love in the arms of someone else. The tears that the singer sheds represent the sadness and hurt caused by the rejection of their love. The second verse describes how the singer's heart was crushed when the person they loved left them. The tears they cry mimic the tears they feel inside as they mourn the loss of their love. The singer wonders if they have truly lost the person they loved forever, just like the tears falling from their eyes. Despite all of this heartache, the singer still proclaims their foolish love.

The repetition of "a fool am I, a fool am I, in love" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's feelings of vulnerability and humiliation due to unrequited love. They're willing to admit their foolishness for loving someone who doesn't love them back. The imagery of the crushed teardrops also adds to the melancholy tone of the song, highlighting the fragility of the singer's emotions in the face of heartbreak. The song is a heartfelt expression of the pain and confusion that can come with loving someone who doesn't love you back.

This is my mother's most favourite song by her most favourite singer, Teresa Brewer. She's 81 now, currently ill, and I'm 37. We have a huge age gap yet I am well-versed in the golden songs of the past and I have come to love them because of her. I'm sure she will be very delighted to see another video of Teresa esp. this one which features her most favourite song. Thank you so much, TESS.
