PERF
BROCKHAMPTON Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Everything that's perfect, damn
You're everything that's perfect, damn
You're everything that's perfect, damn
(Everything that's perfect, damn)
You're everything that's perfect, damn

I know who you are
I know the type of niggas you let in your car
I know I'm not special babe
I know everything you hate
The freckles on your fuckin' face
Makes the most sense to me

Everything that's perfect, damn
You're everything that's perfect, damn
You're everything that's perfect, damn
(Everything that's perfect, damn)
You're everything that's perfect, damn

Two, O, O, seven two, O, O, eight
Two, O, O, nine you, I can't relate
You, a different place
You, a different space
You, I hesitate, for you I never wait
Never wait

Everything that's perfect, damn
You're everything that's perfect, damn
You're everything that's perfect, damn

(Everything that's perfect, damn)
You're everything that's perfect, damn

Overall Meaning

In BROCKHAMPTON's song PERF, the chorus is a repetition of the phrase "Everything that's perfect, damn / You're everything that's perfect, damn" and it is addressed to someone the artist seems to be deeply infatuated with. The lines that follow, however, make the infatuation complicated, hinting at an unrequited love or, at least, an unbalanced relationship where the artist knows he is not as important to the other person as they are to him. He knows who the other person is and the type of people they let in their car--which could mean they have a tendency to go for people who are not as good for them as the artist could be. He also knows everything the other person hates, and yet he is still deeply in love with them, even the freckles on their face "make the most sense" to him.

The second part of the song introduces a specific time frame--"Two, O, O, seven two, O, O, eight / Two, O, O, nine you, I can't relate"--further hinting at a relationship that has not progressed or changed in the last decade. The other person seems to be in a different place, in a different space, and the artist hesitates--yet he never waits, always coming back to the same feelings of infatuation. Overall, the song captures a sense of longing and confusion, with the chorus acting as a haunting reminder of the artist's desire for someone he knows he can't fully have.
