Comprising vocalist Georgia Nott and her elder multi-instrumentalist brother, Caleb Nott, the pair grew up surrounded by music, having played together since they were children. They were in the Peasants, a band that won a competition for intermediate (junior high) and high school musical acts in 2011. After the Peasants broke up, the siblings formed Broods and connected with producer Joel Little, who had served as a judge during the contest. In October 2013, months after Little gained recognition for his work with another Auckland native, Lorde, Broods uploaded "Bridges" to their SoundCloud page and subsequently signed major-label contracts for various territories. The following January, "Bridges" was released commercially and reached the Top Ten in New Zealand.
A self-titled six-track EP co-written by the Notts and Little, and produced by Little, was issued at the end of the month. Released in the U.S. the following month Broods debuted at number 164 on the Billboard 200. Their debut album, Evergreen, arrived in September 2014, topped the New Zealand chart, and reached number 45 in the U.S.
In April 2016, the duo and Little returned with "Free," the first single from their sophomore album. Their second New Zealand chart-topper, Conscious, arrived in the summer of 2016 and featured the Lorde-penned "Heartlines" and a collaboration with Tove Lo. After dominating the 2016 New Zealand Music Awards, they joined international tours with Two Door Cinema Club and Tove Lo. Before the arrival of album three, Broods joined Flight Facilities for "Stranded," and Whethan on "Be Like You."
In 2018, they issued the singles "Peach" and "Everything Goes (Wow)." Both tracks were featured on their third LP, Don't Feed the Pop Monster, which arrived in February 1, 2019. The duo promoted the effort with an international tour that began in London.

Hallelujah, I'm free
(I'm free, I'm free)
I have lived my life so perfectly
Kept to all my lines so carefully
I'd lose everything so I can sing
Hallelujah, I'm free
I'm free, I'm free, I'm free
Hallelujah, I'm free
Gritting your teeth, you hold onto me
It's never enough, I'm never complete
Tell me to prove, expect me to lose
I push it away, I'm trying to move
Hoping for more, and wishing for less
When I didn't care was when I did best
I'm desperate to run, I'm desperate to leave
If I lose it all, at least I'll be free
All I want is your attention please
Don't want your opinion or your fee
'Cause the freest I have ever been
I had nothing to show or be seen
I'm free, I'm free
I'm free, I'm free
Gritting your teeth, you hold onto me
It's never enough, I'm never complete
Tell me to prove, expect me to lose
I push it away, I'm trying to move
Hoping for more, and wishing for less
I didn't care was when I did best
I'm desperate to run, I'm desperate to leave
If I lose it all, at least I'll be free
Gritting your teeth, you hold onto me
It's never enough, I'm never complete
Tell me to prove, expect me to lose
I push it away, I'm trying to move
Hoping for more, and wishing for less
I didn't care was when I did best
I'm desperate to run, I'm desperate to leave
If I lose it all, at least I'll be free
It's clear you think that I'm inferior
Whatever helps you sleep at night
Whatever helps you keep it tight
It's clear you think that I'm inferior
Whatever helps you sleep at night
Whatever helps you keep it tight
Gritting your teeth, you hold onto me
It's never enough, I'm never complete
Tell me to prove, expect me to lose
I push it away, I'm trying to move
Hoping for more, and wishing for less
When I didn't care was when I did best
I'm desperate to run, I'm desperate to leave
If I lose it all, at least I'll be free
Gritting your teeth, you hold onto me
It's never enough, I'm never complete
Tell me to prove, expect me to lose
I push it away, I'm trying to move
Hoping for more, and wishing for less
I didn't care was when I did best
I'm desperate to run, I'm desperate to leave
If I lose it all, at least I'll be free
Hallelujah, I'm free
The lyrics to BROODS's song "Free" convey a strong sense of individuality and freedom. The singer in the song is willing to give up everything they have, including their carefully constructed life and the opinions of others, just to feel free. They reject the idea that success and material possessions are essential for happiness and instead prioritize the sense of liberation that comes with letting go.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of tension between the singer and someone holding onto them, with the lines "gritting your teeth, you hold onto me" repeated throughout. This may represent societal pressures or the expectations of others that the singer is trying to break free from. The repeated use of the phrase "I'm desperate to run, I'm desperate to leave" further emphasizes this desire for independence and the importance of breaking free from external constraints.
The song's refrain of "Hallelujah, I'm free" is a powerful declaration of the singer's newfound sense of liberation, suggesting that the sacrifices they have made are worth it. Overall, "Free" is an anthem of individuality and self-discovery, urging listeners to prioritize their own sense of freedom over material success or the opinions of others.

That's funny, because this song makes me think about quitting too and being FREE from the emotional BS that they put me through every day.
