In the early Seventies, the band switched to hard rock and had its first successes, including a brace of Top 40 hits. After original singer Veerman left and drummer Keizer took his place behind the microphone, the band made a musical U-turn and opted for commercial radio pop, adding female co-vocalist Annie Schilder and laying the foundation for their status as the most popular Dutch band ever (in terms of hit singles and albums). BZN has had over 50 hits in the Dutch hit parade to date.
BZN's claim to fame started with the song "Mon Amour" (1976), which held the #1 hit parade ranking for over 5 weeks. Outside of the Netherlands the band has had some success as well, amongst which several hits in South Africa (such as "Yeppa" in 1990) and minor successes with their French-language songs in Canada.
Through the years there have been many lineup changes, the most important of which have been the departure of Schilder in 1984 (replaced by Carola Smit) and in 1988 of the brothers Cees and Thomas Tol (keyboards), who until then had been responsible for most of the music and lyrics. The band remained nevertheless successful, making their last major change in strategy when they decided to write in Dutch instead of English as of 2003.
BZN are also responsible for the initial success of singer Jan Smit (singer), who was discovered by BZN at the age of 10 and went on to have pop and schlager successes in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
On February 15 2006, BZN announced they would do one final tour and then call it quits. This goodbye tour is scheduled to last until June 2007.

(J. Veerman/J. Keizer/J. Tuijp)
I'm gazing through my little window-pane
Musing to the sound of pouring rain
While I give my thoughts free play
To recall my yesterday
The flight of time is playing its part so well
It happened on a Sunday in the park
The first time that you kissed me in the dark
We had almost found the key
When you walked away from me
The love I gave was thrown away on you
While away the time my love
Your grief will wear away
There's always something to hang on to, time will tell
Crystal gazer, magical man
Tell me fortune if you can
'Cause I wanna know for sure
Is it worthwhile waiting for?
Crystal gazer, magical man
Give the answer if you can
Even though it makes no sense
Youthfull passion never ends
I saw that far-away look in your eyes
And then you started telling me white lies
But the truth will out my friend
Even you could understand
But still I can't forget you anymore
While away the time my love
Your grief will wear away
There's always something to hang on to, time will tell
Crystal gazer, magical man
Tell me fortune if you can
'Cause I wanna know for sure
Is it worthwhile waiting for?
Crystal gazer, magical man
Give the answer if you can
Even though it makes no sense
Youthfull passion never ends
Crystal gazer, magical man
Tell me fortune if you can
'Cause I wanna know for sure
Is it worthwhile waiting for?
Crystal gazer, magical man
Give the answer if you can
Even though it makes no sense
Youthfull passion never ends
The lyrics of BZN's song "Crystal Gazer" seem to be about a person who is reminiscing about their past and questioning the worth of waiting for a love that seems to be lost. The song begins with the singer gazing through their window, lost in thought as the rain pours down. They think about their past experiences and how time has flown by. The song then moves into a specific memory of a moment with a lover in the park. The singer recalls how they almost found the key to their love, but it all fell apart when the lover walked away. The singer laments the love they gave being thrown away on someone who did not reciprocate their feelings.
The chorus of the song introduces the title character of the crystal gazer, a magical man who can supposedly tell fortunes. The singer asks if it is worth waiting for a lost love, seeking answers from the crystal gazer. They acknowledge that youthful passion never truly ends, but they want to know if it is worth holding onto. The song ends with the repetition of this question to the crystal gazer, implying that the singer has yet to find the answer they seek.
Overall, "Crystal Gazer" seems to be a song about chasing after the elusive nature of love and questioning whether it is worth holding onto past loves. The crystal gazer represents a sort of last-resort option for the singer, who seems to be searching for answers and closure.
