The lead single "When the Night" was recently featured on network television on 90210, and the video enjoyed Top Ten rotation on Much Music.
In 2008, Baba joined forces with UK BBC Slam Champion MC Dizraeli to form the hip-hop group Mud Sun, and they co-wrote and released two albums, including "The Rebel Cell", a hip-hop play that was one of the biggest critical successes of the Edinburgh Fringe, winning the "Spirit of the Fringe Award".
Baba's latest project, "The Rap Guide to Evolution" won the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2009, and went on to tour the UK and USA, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.
Baba is currently working with Brighton-based DJ/producer Mr. Simmonds on two new shows (and CDs) for the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe, a sequel to the Evolution show entitled "The Rap Guide to Human Nature" about the science of human behaviour, and a new rap storytelling show, "Rapconteur", which will feature adaptations of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and the Finnish Kalevala.

Darwin's Acid
Baba Brinkman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of his universal acid, and the effects were like magic
Burning human arrogance into ashes
In exactly the same way that Copernican math did
No, the stars don't shine just to improve the view from earth
No, we're not the centre of the universe
No, we weren't created in the image of Jupiter
No, we're not so special, and yes, the truth hurts
The acid burns into the superstitious side
Of the human mind, and fills it with light
It even dissolves the original sin of pride
The pride that says: "I'm a special creation
And my creator has given me dominion over nature
And he has the power to replenish his creatures
So if species go extinct, he can recreate them later
And if he doesn't, well that's just part of his plan"
Ah, but Darwin's acid is hard to withstand
It plucks the arrogance deep from within the hearts of man
And teaches us never to build our houses on sand
But instead to try to understand why we're here
One species among millions in this biosphere
Each with millions of ancestors, whose fighting spirits
Combined to give us this great survival gear
These minds, these limbs, these incredible tools
Perfected by millennia of competitive use
And yes, these attention-seeking genitals too
Without them, these living forms could never improve
It's such an elegant view, full of breadth and grandeur
And yet, some people react with depression and anger
Like: "It's so unsympathetic, so viciously random!
What's the point of compassion, or ethical standards?
If this is just a game that organisms are trapped in
Genetically adapting to environmental factors
Then there's no responsibility for individual actions!
Where's the governing dynamic?!?"
Well, once again Darwin gives us some answers
He says yes, everything from violence to violets to viruses
Consists of organisms adapting to environments
If you're alive, it's because your ancestors were the best survivalists
They were the finalists in the genetic Olympic Games
Every one of your ancestors lived to reproductive age
And they were all better than their competitors at getting laid
Otherwise, you wouldn't be sitting here today
There's something inspirational in this vision of Darwin's
And it goes like this: organisms – like us – are not isolated
Organisms are part of an environmental mix
So your decisions affect evolution – it isn't directionless
Now, before you dismiss me as a mad environmentalist
Just try to imagine how natural selection applies
To countries that have industrialized
Companies live and companies die
And when customers buy based on a company's green plan
That affects the economy, just ask Alan Greenspan
Cultural evolution is ours to reinvent
Wait, can we affect current events? Yes We Can
And when we choose who to sleep with and reproduce
Our sexual choices affect the gene pool
So it's simple, all we need to do is refuse
To sleep with mean people, and things will improve
Especially women – on you the pressure is greater
'Cause men will always do what it takes to get into your favour
That's just in our nature, so if selfish behaviour
Was a sexual graveyard, the effects would be major!
In each of these cases, our intentional efforts
Can play the part of environmental pressures
I can say: "This is a space where a peaceful existence
Will never be threatened by needless aggression"
I can say: "This is an ecosystem where people listen
Where justice increases over egotism
This is a space where religions achieve co-existence
And racism decreases with each coalition"
This is my vision of Darwinism, and how we all factor in
Each of us is a part of the environment; we pass through it
And change it, and affect the way that others adapt to it
And after we get to look back and see how we impacted it
And maybe have a laugh if our sense of humour is still alive
And what did Charles Darwin do? Darwin threw some light
On the origin of mankind, and he left us with skewered pride
But he taught us that, yes, there's grandeur in this view of life
"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one, and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful, and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
Charles Darwin, Origin of Species
The lyrics to Baba Brinkman's song Darwin's Acid discuss the profound impact that Charles Darwin's ideas have had on the way that humans view themselves and their place in the natural world. The song refers to Darwin's theory of evolution as an "acid" that burns away the arrogance and self-importance that humans have historically placed on themselves, revealing instead a more humble understanding of our place in the biosphere.
One of the key themes of the song is the idea that humans are not the center of the universe, nor are we special creations of a divine being. Instead, we are one species among millions, each with our own unique set of adaptations that have helped us to survive and thrive over time. The song suggests that this view of life is not only more accurate, but also more inspiring, as it invites us to recognize the interconnectedness of all living things and to see ourselves as part of a much larger story of evolution.
The song also touches on some of the criticisms that have been leveled against Darwin's theory over the years. Some have argued that it is a cold and unsympathetic view of life, one that leaves no room for compassion or ethical standards. However, the song responds to these criticisms by suggesting that Darwin's theory actually provides a basis for understanding how our individual actions can affect the evolution of life on Earth. By recognizing the ways in which our choices and behaviors can shape the environment around us, we can work to create a more peaceful and just world.
Overall, Baba Brinkman's Darwin's Acid is a thought-provoking exploration of Charles Darwin's ideas and their ongoing impact on our understanding of life on Earth.

But instead to try to understand why we're here
But rather to strive for comprehension of our purpose

If you exist, it is because your ancestors excelled in survival
They were the finalists in the genetic Olympic Games
They achieved recognition as the ultimate competitors in the realm of genetics

All your ancestors survived to reproductive maturity

Organisms are part of an environmental mix
Organisms are integral components of the environment
So your decisions affect evolution – it isn't directionless
Therefore, your choices influence the course of evolution – it is not without purpose
Now, before you dismiss me as a mad environmentalist
Now, before you reject me as a deranged environmental advocate
Just try to imagine how natural selection applies
Consider how natural selection operates
To countries that have industrialized

This is my vision of Darwinism, and how we all factor in
This is my interpretation of Darwinism, and our individual contributions
Each of us is a part of the environment; we pass through it

I'm always telling people that science and nature provide thing far far more mind bending and beautiful than anything you can find in a 2k year old book. I mean every time I see a NASA picture of a nebula I literally cry. It's just all so beautiful once you take a bearded virgin peeping tom in the clouds out of the picture.

Man this rap video blows the bible out of the water in terms of a more magnificent gospel.

AHHHH PREACH! This seriously invigorates my "soul" for the lack of a better term. The message, the mechanisms, the concepts resonate with my deepest desires, passions, vision, frustrations, etc.
and Dawkins in a rap? yes please.

Can we not forget that Charles Darwin had help on evolution and natural selection from a person so over looked, Alfred Russel Wallace.
manu arteteco
Darwin always recognised the work and help of Wallace, just to give Darwin credit about being not only a great scientist, but also a great, honest man

I've been a fan for years now, Baba - how did I miss this amazing track? Brilliant stuff, man!
"There is grandeur in this view of life." "And the fact that it happens to be true also is nice." Hits it out of the park, BB!
