Worst Comes to Worst
Baba Brinkman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"As man advances in civilization, and small tribes are united into larger communities, the simplest reason would tell each individual that he ought to extend his social instincts and sympathies to all the members of the same nation, though personally unknown to him. This point being once reached, there is only an artificial barrier to prevent his sympathies extending to the men of all nations and races."
Charles Darwin, Descent of Man

Worst comes to worst, my people come first
But my tribe lives on every country on earth
I'll do anything to protect them from hurt
The human race is what I serve
Some people got good friend; I've got disparate friends
They live on different ends of earth, but just pretend
We actually get to the end of the time of tribalism
Like Obama said, and dissolve the lines of difference
As man advances in civilization
And small tribes expand into larger bases
And communities, the truest reason tells each individual
That's it's not that difficult to extend our instinctual
Sympathies to all members of one nation
Like, for instance, notice how everybody loves Canadians
Overseas, even if they're personally unknown
Well so do I! But not so much when I come home
But I know there's nothing to stop me extending this basic
Sympathy to the people of all nations and all races
By the way, those are Charles Darwin's statements
Paraphrased, a man ahead of his time
Extending his imagination and formidable mind
Into a future where all human sympathies combine

Worst comes to worst, my peoples comes first
But my tribe lives on every country on earth
I'll do anything to protect them from hurt
The human race is what I serve

In the South Pacific Islands, there's certain animals that don't
Experience fear, like Galapagos iguanas
They never had predators, so their adaptive responses
Evolved to be as calm as a pack of Dalai Llamas
So then, why do we have to live with violence
When this whole planet could be like a pacifistic island?
Do we need fear to escape invading aliens?
The only predators here are called Homo sapiens
And yeah, we can be dangerous, but we can also be
Motivated by affection and reciprocity
Or by that Old Testament animosity: an eye for an eye
But that philosophy's got the whole world blind
Let's not pretend it's gonna be a cake-walk to end it
If violence is an instinct it's not entirely senseless
But the logic of human destiny is reciprocal altruism
Yes we can change our perspectives
And as soon as this is widely comprehended
Then I predict we'll be as calm as Galapagos finches

Worst comes to worst, my peoples comes first
But my tribe lives on every country on earth

I'll do anything to protect them from hurt
The human race is what I serve

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Baba Brinkman's "Worst Comes to Worst" are centered around the idea of extending our sympathies and social instincts to all members of the human race, regardless of nationality or race. The song begins with a quote from Charles Darwin's "Descent of Man" which states that as civilization advances and small tribes expand, individuals should extend their social instincts and sympathies to all members of the same nation, and eventually to people of all nations and races. Brinkman explores this concept, noting that while some people have good friends, he has disparate friends who live on different ends of the earth, but he still extends his sympathy to them.

Brinkman argues that as the human race advances, we should dissolve the lines of difference between nations and races, extending our sympathy and social instincts to people of all races and nations. He acknowledges that it is not easy to end violence and tribalism, but we are capable of changing our perspectives and becoming more peaceful. He references the Galapagos iguanas, which have never had predators and as a result, have evolved to be as calm as a pack of Dalai Llamas. He suggests that we can also evolve to become more peaceful, motivated by affection and reciprocity instead of animosity.

In summary, "Worst Comes to Worst" is an insightful commentary on the importance of extending our social instincts and sympathies to all members of the human race, regardless of nationality or race. By referencing Darwin's philosophy and the Galapagos iguanas, Baba Brinkman suggests that we are capable of evolving as a species to become more peaceful and loving.

And communities, the truest reason tells each individual

It should come naturally to us to extend our care and compassion to those who are not our immediate family or community members.

Sympathies to all members of one nation
We should be able to empathize and care for all people within our own nation, not just the ones we know personally.

Like, for instance, notice how everybody loves Canadians
As an example, people tend to show affection towards Canadians even if they have never met one before.

Overseas, even if they're personally unknown
This affection extends to Canadians living abroad who are not personally known to the person showing the affection.

By the way, those are Charles Darwin's statements
These ideas were originally proposed by Charles Darwin in his book 'Descent of Man'.

Paraphrased, a man ahead of his time
I am restating Darwin's thoughts in my own words, recognizing how innovative and visionary they were.

Extending his imagination and formidable mind

He envisioned a future in which all people would come together and share their compassion and kindness with each other.

In the South Pacific Islands, there's certain animals that don't
In some parts of the world, there are animals--like Galapagos iguanas--that do not experience fear the way other creatures do.

Experience fear, like Galapagos iguanas
These animals do not have any natural predators and therefore have not developed the instinct to feel fear.

They never had predators, so their adaptive responses
Because they were never threatened or endangered, their physiological responses did not need to adjust in response to fear.

Evolved to be as calm as a pack of Dalai Llamas
The result is that these animals are incredibly calm and peaceful, much like a group of meditative llamas.

So then, why do we have to live with violence
If certain animals can thrive without violence and fear, why do humans need to live in a violent world?

When this whole planet could be like a pacifistic island?
We should be able to live in a peaceful, conflict-free world if we choose to prioritize reciprocal kindness and compassion.

Do we need fear to escape invading aliens?
Even the notion of violence as a necessary means of protection may be fundamentally flawed and rooted in our basest instincts.

The only predators here are called Homo sapiens
The only threats to safety and security of our planet come from human beings themselves.

And yeah, we can be dangerous, but we can also be
While it is true that human beings are capable of great harm and destruction,

Motivated by affection and reciprocity
We can also be motivated by love and generosity towards one another.

Or by that Old Testament animosity: an eye for an eye
Alternatively, we can choose to cling to old-fashioned notions of revenge and retaliation as a means of destructive conflict resolution.

But that philosophy's got the whole world blind
This approach only perpetuates hatred and violence and ultimately blinds us to the possibility of a world built on love, compassion, and reciprocity.

Let's not pretend it's gonna be a cake-walk to end it
It will not be easy to end conflicts and violence and instill a more peaceful and compassionate way of life.

If violence is an instinct it's not entirely senseless
However, violence and aggression have been hard-wired into human nature for thousands of years, so we cannot just dismiss them entirely.

But the logic of human destiny is reciprocal altruism
Instead, we should focus on the idea that to be truly human is to be kind and giving towards one another.

Yes we can change our perspectives
It is possible for us to shift our mindsets and choose to live in accordance with these values and principles.

And as soon as this is widely comprehended
When more and more people begin to understand this truth,

Then I predict we'll be as calm as Galapagos finches
We will be able to create a world as peaceful and harmonious as the Galapagos iguanas and llamas, living in a state of mutual cooperation and respect for each other's needs and perspectives.

Science is a quest to find the best-fit explanations for the observed evidence. Evolution IS science. Biologists, as part of their work, put the evidence together and described it in theory. Nobody disputes that. Is evolution true? It's as true as the theory of gravity. Science isn't in the business of finding out what is true, but in best describing what exists. In biology, evolution is that description. If anything, science hunts what's false, to better refine the theories.

I disagree. A truly compassionate human must realize that humans have become a cancer.

And, continuing the lesson of the belly dancing harem babes, today's lesson is that hula hotties and copious hugs are the result of embracing the idea that "my tribe is of every county on earth." Again, the visual rhetoric of your music videos makes a compelling argument, Baba.
