Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I live it high cost of livin' tell me why give it all.
Inside you gotta head high one size fits all
Head ride, you decide

Sweet, sweet ride. Sweet sweet ride. 1969

I live it why ya gotta limit, crossed grin now I
Gotta bare it.
Head high 9 inside hell to ride you beside
Sweet, sweet ride. Sweet sweet ride. 1965

I live it, it's not a gimmick my side anti-red.
What I said in your head naked what you hide
Will the planes ever collide, we align, collide.
My sweet sign: 1969

I like it hot cold livin'
Have you seen the inside of my ceiling's gotta big wild grin inside miles wide you belie
Sweet, sweet ride. Sweet sweet ride. 1965

I've had it now I've gotta give it all blind mice resign you gotta hoodshine analyze.
Seats alive vinyl thighs
Sweet ride. Sweet, sweet ride. 1969.

I live it what I take.
Why I give it not away ?
Pen said why side when I'm dead I gotta live it
Speak free sexually
Why, why

Sweet, sweet ride

I feel it sky's not a limit gotta nice flight suit and tie headlights on inside souled a price you can't buy.

Sweet sweet sixty sexy I idolize your
Sixxy sexty oh my sixty sixxy nine.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Babes in Toyland's "Sweet '69" are quite enigmatic and open to interpretation. The song begins with the singer talking about the high cost of living and how they're baring it all, inviting us to look inside their head. They mention head ride and invite us to decide. The chorus sings about a sweet ride in 1969, and as the song continues, more years pop up.

The second verse shows the singer questioning why they're being limited and tells us that they're willingly baring it all. They invite us to ride alongside them and talk about the inside of their ceiling, which has a big wild grin. The third verse tells us that what they're saying isn't a gimmick and that they're anti-red. They mention nakedness and hiding things that one shouldn't, and question if planes will ever collide. The singer also says that they have a sweet sign in 1969.

The last part mentions a nice flight suit, and vinyl thighs with a price you couldn't afford. The lyrics mention different years throughout the song, 1969, 1965 and 1966. The singer mentions sexual freedom and ends the song with the chorus talking about a sweet ride.

Overall, the lyrics of "Sweet '69" are vague and poetic, and it's not clear what the song is about, but listeners are free to interpret them and derive their meaning.

I really appreciate how quickly she can switch her vocals from playful, coy, kitten to setting the double wide trailer on fire with me in it

This is the most under appreciated grunge band in my opinion, deserve more credit to their contributions

@peterwalsh2470

ok so now as a 53 year old, how is it that I have only discovered this band now?? I feel like I really missed out. It seems a miscarriage of history that this band isn't more well known. I would have loved them back in the day. this song goes hard by the way.

@pekerhed101

They weren't "grunge". How dare you shit on their name.

@alexxander808

@@pekerhed101 how do you figure they weren't or rather they aren't grunge? That's confusing

@AFloridaSon

@@alexxander808 When most of us started hearing of the genre "Grunge", it was connected to bans like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, and other bands with a more soulful, sometimes bluesy sound. Lots of us did not immediately connect it to just any sound that came out of Seattle in the 80s and 90s.

@alexxander808

@@AFloridaSon Grunge wasnt solely formed in Seattle there was San Francisco, Portland and Minneapolis as well. Mainly Westcoast for sure though, yeah I I understand why you feel that way. Being this many years away though from the corporate machine and being able to just analyze it from a creative standpoint Grunge to me is simply a production style and there are bands from that exact time that dont have that production style which makes it evident it's not just the era. Steve Albini is a major contributor to that production style and hes from Chicago like the smashing pumpkins.
