Nobody Cares
Baby Washington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nobody knows (nobody knows)
Nobody cares (nobody cares)
When the tears fall from my eyes
Do you think anyone would stop
And ask me the reason why

No, because nobody
Nobody cares about me

Nobody knows (nobody knows)
Nobody cares (nobody cares)
When I am sitting all alone
Do you think anyone would
Call me on the telephone

No, because nobody
Nobody cares about me

Yes, I used to have many lovers
Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah
They have gone and
Found themselves others

Now I'm alone
Just as lonely as can be

Nobody knows (nobody knows)
Nobody cares (nobody cares)
When the tears fall from my eyes
Do you think anyone would stop
And ask me the reason why

No, because nobody
Nobody cares about me

Overall Meaning

The song "Nobody Cares" by Baby Washington is a heart-wrenching portrayal of loneliness and neglect. The lyrics encompass a feeling of being completely alone and unwanted, with no one to turn to during moments of sorrow or sadness. The title of the song alone is revelatory, and it is clear from the onset that we are in for an emotional journey. The song's first stanza encapsulates the essence of the song, with the lines "nobody knows, nobody cares/when the tears fall from my eyes/do you think anyone would stop/and ask me the reason why." The lyrics serve as a representation of someone who weeps in silence, unnoticed by the world, never eliciting the slightest interest. The gloomy atmosphere of the song is delivered through the use of slow and sorrowful music, thus providing the listener with an emotional insight into the artist's state of mind.

The chorus brings us back to the song's title, "nobody cares about me," which has become both a conclusion and a plea by the end, and the second verse speaks of a lover who has abandoned the singer. "Yes, I used to have many lovers/ they have gone and found themselves other/ now I'm alone, just as lonely as can be" serves as a representation of rejection, a seminal heartbreak that no longer feels fresh but remains as painful as always. The final lines of the song, "when the tears fall from my eyes/do you think anyone would stop/and ask me the reason why," repeat the song's main message of neglect and loneliness, crystallizing the song's overall theme.

Such a beautiful and sad song! One of my favorites and I play it on my weekly WEGL - Auburn, Ala. radio show. The lyrics are so sad and you can just picture a woman thinking about her happy romantic past but now "No! Nobody cares about me."

Baby Washington's voice is amazing!!! I bet at this time she was a lil' skinny thang with vocal chops that won't quit. Baby's got a voice that is a pleasure to listen to.

What a clean, clean, uncolored aural quality on this record.  Never had the chance to hear Baby's stuff before Sue until now...great stuff

Even the back-up vocalists can convince you that they, too, are sad, because... well... nobody cares. I absolutely LOVE this song. I was only about 5 years old when my aunt used to play this song.
