You Talk
Babyshambles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You talk, you talk a good game
I wish I could talk the same
And a song is just a game
I'm getting good at cheating

That's how you talk
Ah yes, you talk a good game
Won't you teach me the same?
I would love to explain
I love to show your hand and all about

Oh well, I know, I know, I know
I know it's wrong and so and so
So what, I suppose it's got to go out

I never ever said it was clever
I just like getting leathered
Looking for the light
Light behind your eyes

Well, you talk, you talk a good game
I wish I could talk the same
And a song is just a game
I'm getting good at cheating

Utah, remember Utah in the rain
And those little red shoes
And some kid with the blues
Who gets right on your tits
You just grin and bear it

Yeah, I know, I know, I know
I know it's wrong and so and so and so
And so it's got to go out

I never ever said it was clever
I just like getting leathered
I'm looking for the light
Light behind your eyes

Bevan, he drops stones from heaven
L O are D forever
And the love, the love behind your eyes

You talk, you talk a good game
You talk, you talk a good game
You talk, you talk a good game
You talk, you talk a good game

Well, I never ever said it was clever
I just like getting leathered
Looking for the light
Behind your eyes

Bevan, he drops stones from heaven

L O are D forever
And the love behind your eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Babyshambles' song "You Talk" explore the idea of deception and manipulation in conversation and relationships. The first stanza finds the singer admiring someone who can talk a good game, wishing they could do the same, but then revealing that they are getting good at cheating. This could mean that they are becoming adept at deceiving others through their words, or that they are cheating in some other sense and using their ability to talk well as a smokescreen.

The chorus repeats the mantra "you talk a good game," asking the other person to teach them the same. The singer likes to show the other person's hand and reveal the truth, but also acknowledges that what they are doing is wrong and has to come out eventually. It seems that they are conflicted between wanting to be good at conversation and wanting to be truthful.

The second stanza refers to memories of a past lover, Utah, who had little red shoes and a kid who always had the blues. The singer admits that this person got on their nerves, but they learned to grin and bear it. Again, they acknowledge that what they are doing is wrong, but seem to suggest that they cannot help themselves. The final stanza brings in the name Bevan, who drops stones from heaven, and mentions the love behind the other person's eyes.

Jetzt muss erst einmal mein extrem erhöhter Adrenalinspiegel herunterfahren!

Peter can have the lights behind my eyes any day of the week. I wish he had a chance to make more videos. He makes live preformances look so perfect, flawless, and easy. I wonder what kinda of amazing video he would be able to produce with a decent budget.

Julian Hallberg

The relatively low budget is the whole beauty of it and gives it the authentic look
