Down Down
Bachman-Turner Overdrive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've made up my mind
I've got to get out in a hurry
I've stated my case
There's no need to come on with worry

'Cause I'm a real straight shooter
And my boot heels are clean
I'll always try to do better
I don't live in no dream

I live down to the line

You know I made it all right (down to the line)
Stayed up all night (down to the line)
It's the way to live life (down to the line)
It's the way to live love (down to the line)

Down to the line, down to the line
Sooner or later it gets you every time
Down to the line

I found me a way
To stand up this way without cryin'
Now they asked for the key
But they're complainin' instead of just tryin'

But I'm a real straight shooter
And my boot heels are clean
I'll always try to do better
I don't live in no dream

I live down to the line

You know I made it all right (down to the line)
Stayed up all night (down to the line)
It's the way to live love (down to the line)
It's the way to love life (down to the line)

Down to the line, down to the line
Sooner or later it gets you every time
Down to the line, down to the line

Down to the line, down to the line
Sooner or later it gets you every time
Down to the line, down to the line
Sooner or later it gets you every time
Down to the line, I'll make it all right
Down to the line, sometimes I stay up all night
Down to the line, down to the line
Down to the line, sooner or later, it gets you every time
I stay up all night, I make it all right
Stayin' up all night, down to the line
Make it all right, down to the line

If I learn to fly
You know I'll go places never been before
If I reach a star
You know I will dwell on it forever, forever

There are mysteries
My children have rhymes with hidden meanings
If I learn the truth
I'm sure that the end will leave me crying, leave me crying

When the mornin' comes
You'll know by my shoes I've been out walking
If I don't return
You'll know I've found something to believe in, to believe in
Waiting for the sun
My heart will surely break if it starts raining
It's the oasis I seek
'Cause the sand of the desert makes me thirsty, makes me thirsty
Down, down we all go down
'Round, 'round we all go 'round
Down, down we all go down
We all go down-down-down-down
If I learn to fly
You know I'll go places never been before
If I reach a star
You know I will dwell on it forever, forever
There are mysteries
My children have rhymes with hidden meanings
If I learn the truth
I'm sure that the end will leave me crying, leave me crying

By 1977 DISCO & PUNK were the two major influencers, plus there was a plethora of NEW WAVE acts bursting into the mainstream.
FOREIGNER's debut album was in 1977.
Yet, RUMOURS by FLEETWOOD MAC was massive
AC/DC had LET THERE BE ROCK

Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
David Bowie - Low
Ian Dury - New Boots and Panties!!
Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue
Pink Floyd - Animals
Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
The Stranglers - No More Heroes
Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
The Bee Gee’s Saturday Night Fever soundtrack
Bryan Ferry – In Your Mind
Jonathan Richman – Rock ‘n’ Roll with the Modern Lovers

The Jam – In The City
The Jam - This Is the Modern World

The Jam released two albums in 1977

Steve Miller Band – Book of Dreams
Richard Hell And The Voidoids – Blank Generation
Kiss – Love Gun
Billy Joel – The Stranger
Brian Eno – Before and After Science
Is proto-post-punk just punk? Or is it this album by electronic music pioneer and Bowie and Talking Heads collaborator, Brain Eno? Before and After Science charted out a course for punk’s next stage of evolution just as the genre itself was being born.

Wire – Pink Flag
Full of wonderful, concise statements of punk intent, Wire’s Pink Flag remains one of the most influential albums of 1977.

Suicide – Suicide

One of the most provocative punk groups in the New York scene, Suicide sounded like few others, using synths as a major part of their sound.
Talking Heads – Talking Heads 77
Bob Marley and the Wailers – Exodus
Kraftwerk – Trans Europe Express
Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols
Steely Dan – Aja

These are several reasons why some Bands and some albums got lost in the wash, like a missing sock.

AUSTRALIAN Radio was even more fickle than the U.S. radio in 1977.
AUSTRALIA had a wide range of our own musicians hotly competing for airplay in 1977.

From my empirical experiences, I've found that a lot of people working in Radio really shouldn't be there.

In 1977, BTO weren't the only great Band to be ignored by AUSTARLIAN Radio...........

This is one of their greatest tracks IMHO. The verse is just so gnarly but melodic and I love that harmonised solo/interlude.
