Sugg has come a long way from the being the little boy growing up in Tennessee that was once intrigued and inspired by the sheet music hidden in his aunt’s old piano bench. Always ready to accomplish a new challenge – Sugg began teaching himself how to play the piano at age 11. Soon after learning his first instrument, he found himself picking up an acoustic guitar and doing just the same. Now 23 years old, Sugg has gone on to master the drums, banjo, bass, and even the mandolin. The ever-evolving musician found his earliest musical creations channeling his biggest musical influence, Bright Eyes, and has since taken the emotionally sincere lyrical qualities of this inspiration and blended them with his own unique disposition of optimism and content.
In just five short years, the charismatic Sugg has used simplicity, sincerity, and smiles to gain the approval of the music world. In his short career, Sugg has already pumped out six EPs (many of them featuring a “full length” amount of songs), five annual holiday EPs, and one LP, Dressed Up Like Dreams. The non-stop production of music, touring, and self-promotion has certainly started to pay off - With over 500,000 song downloads on PureVolume, nearly 100,000 singles sold, and thousands of albums sold, it comes as no surprise that Backseat Goodbye has already found a place in the iTunes Folk Top 100 Album and Singles charts - multiple times, and has landed himself coveted sets at SXSW and CMJ, as well as a being a featured band in Alternative Press Magazine’s AP&R section.
Reminiscent of the high spirited vocals and positivism of The Rocket Summer and the polished, upbeat musicality of Eric Hutchinson, Backseat Goodbye has created a blend all his own, that immediately embraces the hearts, imaginations – and hope, of listeners around the world.
In the words of Sugg, Backseat Goodbye is “music for the hopeful, music for the kids with their heads in the clouds, and music by a kid that’s just as lost in life as everyone else.”

I like to sing and you like the movies
Life it's not a photograph, you gotta keep moving
Frames are for folks with no hope
If I'm all alone, you're a new brick home
Windows and doors, locks and rugs
I don't have a reason or a simple excuse
Well, everybody lies sometime
Even winners have to lose
Doors, they work both ways
Even blind men have to choose
Whether they're gonna wake up with a smile on their face
Just because they can't see don't mean that they can't sing
It's up to you to find beauty in the ugliest days
Don't you waste your life waiting for it to change
Just put on your dancing shoes and dance those cares away
Yeah, if I'm 'The Sound Of Music' you're 'The Science Of Sleep'
'Cause I'm obviously and you're obviously
Too young to care, too bold to love, too naive to notice
That sometimes all you need is some love
To get by, to get by, to be alright even when the world is off it's axis
It's Sunday and you just wanted to enjoy the afternoon
I need a new love, someone to help me home
When I'm drunk and can't stand up
I need a new life, someone to tell me wrong
From right so I won't screw it up again
Maybe we could wait 'til the sunset sank
And devise a new plan to start over again
Good luck with all the things you took
It's amazing how much a month can change someone
I thought one of us would end up in the middle
But beginnings and endings are pretty much the same thing
Pretty much the same thing
I'm not going home alone again
I'm not going home alone this time
I'm not going home alone again
I'm not going home alone tonight
Maybe we could wait 'til the sunset sank
And devise a new plan to start over again
Good luck with all the things you took
It's amazing how much a month can change someone
I thought one of us would end up in the middle
But beginnings and endings are pretty much the same thing
Pretty much the same thing, pretty much the same thing
In "Song for Audrey," by Backseat Goodbye (real name Chad Sugg), the artist invokes two icons of midcentury glamour to explore themes of love and transience. The song likens the singer to Frank Sinatra and the object of his affection to Audrey Hepburn, two figures who remain eternally cool and refined even as time marches on. The first verse describes the contrast between their interests, with the singer's love of music and the actress's love of movies. The lyrics suggest that, while life may seem static and passive like a photograph, one must keep moving to progress and find happiness. The last line of the verse is particularly poignant, proclaiming that "frames are for folks with no hope," implying that old-fashioned ideas of stability and permanence prevent growth and vitality.
The second verse explores the idea of relationships as shelter and security. The metaphor of the "new brick home" with "windows and doors, locks and rugs" directly compares the singer with his love interest, who offers him a foundation of love and stability. However, in contrast with the romantic ideal of finding one's other half, the chorus reminds us that even the strongest relationships can have their share of illusions and compromises. As the lyrics assert, everyone tells lies at some point or another, and doors "work both ways." Even individuals facing extreme challenges, such as blind individuals, are subject to tough choices that determine the quality of their lives. Ultimately, the song advises listeners to focus on beauty and love while navigating life's difficulties, rather than waiting for circumstances to change.
