Richardson permanently rejoined the group in 2012. In the following year, they celebrated their 20th anniversary and released their first independent album, In a World Like This. Their follow-up album DNA (2019) debuted at number one, more than two decades after the group formed and 19 years after they last topped in 2000. They also became the first boy band to top the U.S. album charts in three different decades.
The Backstreet Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling boy band of all time, and one of the world's best-selling music artists. They are the first group since Led Zeppelin to have their first ten albums reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200, and the only boy band to do so. The albums Backstreet Boys and Millennium were both certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making them one of the few bands to have multiple diamond albums.
The group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 22, 2013.[ They also released their first documentary movie, titled Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of in January 2015. In March 2017, the group began a residency in Las Vegas that lasted two years, titled Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life. They released their first Christmas album, A Very Backstreet Christmas in 2022.

Baby, please try to forgive me
Stay here don't put out the glow
Hold me now don't bother
If every minute it makes me weaker
You can save me from the man that I've become, oh yeah
I was trying to be someone
I played my part, kept you in the dark
Now let me show you the shape of my heart
Sadness is beautiful, loneliness that's tragical
So help me I can't win this war, oh no
Touch me now, don't bother
If every second it makes me weaker
You can save me from the man I've become
Looking back on the things I've done
I was trying to be someone (trying)
I played my part, kept you in the dark (in the dark)
Now let me show you the shape of my heart
I'm here with my confession
Got nothing to hide no more
I don't know where to start
But to show you the shape of my heart
I'm lookin' back on things I've done
I never wanna play the same old part
I'll keep you in the dark (keep you in the dark)
Now let me show you the shape of my heart
Looking back on the things I've done
I was trying to be someone (trying to be someone)
I played my part, kept you in the dark
Now let me show you the shape of my heart (now let me show you the shape of my heart)
Looking back on the things I've done
I was trying to be someone
I played my part, kept you in the dark
Now let me show you the shape of
Show you the shape of my heart
The Backstreet Boys’ hit song “Shape of My Heart” is an introspective look at a man’s past mistakes and his desire to come clean with the person he loves, hoping she can forgive him. The lyrics start with a plea, asking the partner to forgive him and not give up on their relationship. He admits that his past actions, the things he’s done, have been out of line, and now he wants to show her who he truly is. He is aware of the sadness and tragedy resulting from his actions, but he feels like he is in over his head and cannot win this battle on his own. In this vulnerable moment, he hopes that she can save him from himself and from the man he’s become.
As the song progresses, he looks back on the things he’s done and realizes he was trying to impress others and be someone he was not. He concealed parts of himself from his partner, leaving her in the dark. But now he wants to come clean, confess his mistakes, and show her the “shape of his heart.” This phrase implies that he is baring his soul to her, revealing the true essence of his being. He promises to keep her in the light and never play the same old part again. Instead, he will show her the real him.
Overall, “Shape of My Heart” is a touching tribute to the power of human vulnerability, repentance, and forgiveness. It teaches us that no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes, but it is possible to reconcile and learn from them.
