In the 80’s in San Francisco, we all went out clubbing on the weekends and dance all night. There was a after hour club called the Trocadero that stayed open until 8 or 9 am.and where everyone who still wanted to party went after being at other clubs. You had to be a member and not everyone got to experience this club and it was a hat underground club with a great space and sound system.
It would be packed and all the best dancers in SF Bay Area showed up to dance all night. They also played the best dance music in the west coast. It was our “Paradise Garage” before house music was being played.
I could still see the excitement on the dance floor when certain songs came on and all the dancers knew it was time to express yourself to the fullest with your moves. I remember one time when this song came on and sent a charge to all the dancers. I was dancing with this regular name Debbie and she had on the sequin dress with shingles hanging off it. So when she moved to this song, her dress moved to the beat. We used wait for the crowd to thin out after 3 pm. That’s when the djs knew only the serious dancers were left and now the club was only half full. That’s when the djs played the best tracks and no longer having to please the main crowd. That’s when the real dancing happened and the dance floor was only left with serious dancers and the floor was like a stage for dancers.
Bc I am Chinese, but grew up in the hood, most that I bet in the clubs, never seen a Chinese person knowing how to freestyle dance. Once this friend that used to be a dancer for the SF Ballet said, I just love watching you dance. I was so flattered bc I never took a dance class of any kind and coming from a ballerina, that was a huge compliment.
I miss those days and the excitement of going out to a club and dancing the night away and taking your mind off the other problems in life.
