The band's first, self-titled album was released in 1988, and it met with a great fan response as well as gave the band two hit singles in the United States: "When I See You Smile" and "Price of Love". Positive reviews followed by massive tours built up immense expectations about the songwriting talent of the band in their future endeavors. However, on their second album, entitled 'Backlash', the one and only single failed to enter the U.S. Top 40, peaking instead at only number 42. Critical views were also mixed on the release.
Soon after the band recorded their second album 'Backlash', in 1991, the group disbanded. Members went their separate ways even before the album could be mixed. In a later interview, frontman John Waite said that, while he enjoyed playing to stadium-sized audiences again, he wasn't happy with the somewhat 'corporate rock' image that the Bad English had been tagged as having. He has since had a solo career focused more on mellower singer-songwriter music.

It's everything you wanted
Now it's tearing you apart
You're gonna raise a family now
But you don't know where to start
I remember you
Me I pack a suitcase
A little east of Eden
Too late to turn around
Marionettes on wires
You dance out of control
I remember you
Are you crying in your sleep tonight
When you're lying with him
Do you turn out the light
Are you hiding in your dreams tonight
In your world
I will be the ghost in your heart
The ghost in your heart
Well you said you couldn't take it
You had to settle down
And I was the wild one
With both feet off the ground
I could never understand you
But I loved you anyhow
I remember now
Are you crying in your sleep tonight
When you're lying with him
Do you turn out the light
Are you hiding in your dreams tonight
In your world
I will be the ghost in your heart
The ghost in your heart
Yeah
Something in the first kiss
Is written in the sand
We held it for a moment
But it slipped straight through our hands
I stare at your reflection
And sometimes see my face
I remember you
You remember too
Are you crying in your sleep tonight
When you're lying with him
Do you turn out the light
Are you hiding in your dreams tonight
In your world
Are you crying in your sleep tonight
Are you lying with him
Thinkin' 'bout me tonight
Are you hiding in your dreams tonight
In your world
I will be the ghost in your heart
The ghost in your heart
In your heart
In your heart
Ghost in your
heart
The lyrics to Bad English's song "Ghost In Your Heart" detail the conflicting emotions that come with a failed relationship. The song is about a woman who has settled down with someone else and is raising a family, but is still haunted by the memory of her previous lover. The white picket fence around her heart represents the idealized life she wanted, but now she finds herself torn apart by the reality of her situation.
The singer, on the other hand, has always been a traveler, never settling down in one place for too long. He sees the woman as a marionette on wires, dancing out of control in her attempts to maintain the life she has chosen. Despite this, he still loves her and wonders if she thinks of him at night. The line "Something in the first kiss is written in the sand" suggests that their love was fleeting, but still leaves an indelible mark.
The chorus of the song promises that no matter where the woman goes, the singer will always be the ghost in her heart. He will haunt her thoughts, memories, and dreams, never letting her forget the love they shared, even as she moves on and builds a new life without him.
