Bohemian Rhapsody
Bad News Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me

Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters

Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooo (anyway the wind blows)
I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all

I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo Figaro - magnifico

But I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come easy go will you let me go
Bismillah! No we will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go let me go
Will not let you go let me go (never)
Never let you go let me go
Never let me go ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me
For me
For me

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh baby can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out just gotta get right outta here

Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Nothing really matters
Anyone can see
Nothing really matters nothing really matters to me

Anyway the wind blows

Overall Meaning

The song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen is an incredibly unique piece, composed of several distinct parts ranging from ballad to opera to hard rock. The lyrics themselves are famously difficult to pin down in terms of meaning or narrative, and have been the subject of much discussion over the years. The song opens with the question "Is this the real life?/Is this just fantasy?", setting a surreal and dreamlike tone. The singer laments his situation, being "just a poor boy" with "no escape from reality." He takes the opportunity to express his nihilistic philosophy, living life with an ease and detachment: "Anyway the wind blows/doesn't really matter to me, to me."

The song's middle section takes a darker turn, as the singer describes having killed a man and expressing regret to his mother. The mood shifts again, with the character facing his own mortality and departing from life with the phrase "nothing really matters." The final rock section is a defiance against those who have wronged him, and a declaration that his life is his own: "So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye/So you think you can love me and leave me to die/Oh baby can't do this to me baby/Just gotta get out just gotta get right outta here." In all, "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a sublime piece of musical art, defying conventional structure and content and fusing rock and classical styles in a way that had never been done before.

These guys are really talented..... try messing up iconic songs intentionally, I bet... it’s a lot tougher than you ever imagined

Stigma

Brilliant!! Bad News actually did a tour in the late 80's and I was lucky enough to see them live at Manchester Apollo, I must have been about 17 at the time and it was hilarious! There was a huge wall of fake Marshall stacks behind the band "Bloody 'ell Vim, it's a Marshall !" at one point a huge banner dropped down saying "Bad News reserve the right to be shit" in massive letters. To show how metal he was, Vim swallowed a bottle of industrial cleaner and died, and the band briefly became The Colin Grigson experience, only for Vim to be resurrected in a puff of smoke and a silver cape! At one point Den Dennis came on stage in a chicken costume and announced " I am the chicken of doom and I bring you the eggs of destruction " . It was one of the best gigs I have ever been to and my face hurt from laughing at the end of the night. Rik Mayall R.I.P. He and the other members of the comic strip presents formed my sense of humour and made me cry with laughter. Comedy gods!

@Steven Johnson Hey Steve, nice one! Another Warrior of Genghis Khan! (I know you'll get that reference). If they were half as good as in Manchester it must be a great memory of yours? It's cool being in touch with people who saw Bad News live. Most people I've spoken to who are old enough to remember The Comic Strip Presents and Bad News don't even know that they did a tour, and it's only since I left my first comment on this video that I've spoken to anybody who actually saw them live,it was another guy called Steve, weirdly! (I only went with one mate and I've lost touch with him). I knew it was great and piss funny at the time but the older I get I realise how lucky I was to see such a hilariously funny and talented group of people at the very top of their game on what was, as far as I know, the only tour they ever did! I hope you feel the same. All the best Steve. P.S. "I'm getting out right now if we're anything to do with the new romantics" Another reference I'm sure you'll get. ROCK N ROLL!!! Wes.

RIP Rik, you really rocked that bass. But hats off to Brian May for murdering his own guitar riff (for those that weren't aware, Brian May not only played the guitars on the track but also produced it)

CapHowdy

Actually Adrian Edmondson played most of the guitar, and May actually said in an interview that they spent so long rehersing this song that the whole band found it difficult to actually play the instruments badly.
Mays guitar playing on the song was minimal compared to Ades.
