Cyanide
Bad Religion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well let me bend your ear
Because I'm never really there
When shadows turns to light
And hope into despair

There was an only one
But the broody skies above
Brought down a shameful stain
And not a single drop of cleaning rain

Let me say
(Oh oh) well there's no place left to hide
(Oh oh) from the loneliness inside
The road to you is paved right through with bloody good intentions
And missin' you is like kissin'
Cyanide

Well in this world of things
One of them is lost
I've been it in my dreams
But not without a cost

Down a lonely street
It was our destiny to meet
Nobody asked you twice
We found purchase then with no requite (nothing nice)

(Oh oh) well there's no place left to hide
(Oh oh) from the loneliness inside
The road to you is paved right through with bloody good intentions
And missin' you is like kissin'
Cyanide

Would you believe in something good that's so wrong
And have you worshiped our invention
I've paid my debt in coin and sweat with trifling hesitation
Because the road to you is paved with good intentions

(Oh oh) well there's no place left to hide
(Oh oh) from the loneliness inside
The road to you is paved right through with bloody good intentions
And missin' you is like kissin'
Cyanide

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song Cyanide by Bad Religion convey a sense of detachment and distance from the world around the singer. He talks about bending someone's ear with a sense of urgency, perhaps suggesting that he is not often listened to or heard. The words "shadows turn to light and hope into despair" suggest a sense of loss or disappointment, as if the things that seemed bright and hopeful turned out differently than expected.

The next few lines suggest that something bad has happened, a "shameful stain" that cannot be cleaned. The rain, which is often seen as a purifying force, doesn't help. The singer seems to be talking about a relationship or a personal mistake that he regrets. The lines "there was an only one but the broody skies above" suggest that this was a unique or important person in his life. Perhaps the two of them met on a "lonely street" and ended up together, but it wasn't a happy ending.

The chorus is catchy and memorable, with a sense of desperation and yearning. The singer admits that he can't hide from his own loneliness, and that missing the person he is singing about is like "kissing cyanide." The metaphor suggests that being close to this person is lethal, but he still longs for their presence. The bridge of the song expresses some confusion, asking if something good can also be wrong, and if the singer's "worship" of this relationship was misguided. He appears to have paid some kind of price for his decisions or actions, but at the same time, he acknowledges that he has good intentions.

Jake Palmer

Dan

theres nothing wrong with not being raw or aggressive. its great some of the time but this is still melodic and has good lyrics. if it sounds good and has good lyrics, why complain? i mean, ill agree suffer and no control are better albums for sure, but its still great.

Kettlebell Drums

Just how I feel about my ex. Missing her is like kissing cyanide. I'm glad I found someone better

Bidenflation victim

Great song for how I feel about my father

PrinceOpana

This might sound weird, but now that they've released the brilliantly solid True North, I can enjoy the poppier albums like this a lot more. True North was the reassurance that BR can still kick fucking ass.

punkhippe

PrinceOpana i agree 100 percent. Im glad they are more deverse. Im not buying three more of this kinda album though. Still dig this song.

Boognish

PrinceOpana - I like this album a lot more than true north, but both are good for sure. Brooks is a wizard
