Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Bad Religion (Holiday) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
"Glory to the newborn King!"
The lyrics to Bad Religion's version of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" stay true to the original subject matter: the joyous announcement of the birth of Jesus Christ. The first verse describes the message of the angels and the Gospel of peace on earth and forgiveness of sins through the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. The second verse honors Jesus as the Lord who is both fully divine and fully human, born of a virgin to dwell among humanity as Emmanuel. The final verse exalts Christ as the Prince of Peace, the embodiment of righteousness and the giver of life, who was born to redeem humanity and offer them a second chance at life. The entire song is a celebration of the arrival of a savior and the hope and forgiveness he brings.
Interestingly, the song was originally written in the 18th century by Charles Wesley and only later set to music by composer Felix Mendelssohn. In fact, Mendelssohn initially wrote the music as part of a cantata to celebrate the invention of the printing press in Germany. Also, the song has been covered and recorded by countless artists over the years, including Mariah Carey, Pentatonix, and The Charlie Brown Christmas album. It's often associated with Christmas and can be heard in countless Christmas films and TV shows. The song was also featured in the movie "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and has been used in numerous commercials for years.
