Bad Things will have a certain level of guaranteed success.
Mr. White is carrying over his fan base from snowboarding into music.
And that's fine. It's very smart to ensure success.
Lets keep the snowboard world and music world separate for the time being:
From the perspective of music alone, this is a very good attempt, there is nothing wrong with the music - how can it go 'wrong' when whether or not it's 'good' is decided 100% by opinion.
However, there is nothing within this song that attempts to enrich the world of music. This again, isn't bad, they could also not be worried about setting their sights on innovation, they could be having fun, and that's fine.
However, the lyrics don't provide any originality, and the sound is a mix of standard pop-rock with the slightest hint of the all-too-hip indie-love, most prominently (still very slightly) in the intro and the chorus.
That being said, these criticisms don't make the music bad. It just makes it much easier for them to blend into obscurity.
For me when I compare Shaun White's snowboarding career with what he's presented to the music world, I become a little disappointed.
With snowboarding he's made sure he was blazing a trail of innovation. This alone is what lead to his enormous success. He was always surprising everyone.
This music isn't surprising me, and I can't imagine it will surprise too many, except for those where music is not a main focus of their life. [SIDE NOTE: It's almost always the case that the type of music that appeals to other artists and musicians for some obscure reason often attracts the masses - although they can't say why they like it. Its not that the masses aren't capable of knowing why they like it, it's that they weren't trained with the right skills and vocabulary to express why]
Some people for sure will love this. Again it's all a matter of taste and opinion.
But for me, I will remember Shaun from his extreme sports days... For now.
