Believe Me
Badfinger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Believe me, if I wanted
Spend the rest of my time with a mean, lean, woman like you
Would I?
If I needed, but I don't

Will I?
If you want me
Give you all the love in the world that a man could
Still I, if I needed, I could

Then I could cry your name and you would come
There'd be no need for me anymore, anymore!

Believe me, if I wanted

Spend the rest of my time with a mean, lean, woman like you
Would I, if I needed, but I don't

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Badfinger's song "Believe Me" are essentially about a man who is conflicted about his feelings towards a woman. On one hand, he acknowledges that she is someone he could potentially spend his time with, but on the other hand, he doesn't feel like he needs to commit to her. He tells her that if she wants him, he will give her all the love in the world, but even then, he questions whether or not he truly wants to be with her.

The most poignant line in the song comes towards the end when he says "Then I could cry your name and you would come, there'd be no need for me anymore, anymore!" This line perfectly encapsulates the struggle the man is feeling – he knows that if he were to give in to his feelings, she would always be there for him, but he can't bring himself to fully commit to that level of vulnerability.

Overall, "Believe Me" is a subtly complex song about the push and pull of relationships and how even when we know what we should do, our emotions can make it difficult to follow through.

Wow! Just to see Pete and Tommy harmonizing together. What a match made in heaven. Together they sounded so good on those hits like "Baby Blue" and "Come And Get." This is just unbelieevable. Thank you. I'm loving YouTube!!!

Such a brilliant, talented band. Makes me very sad to think that if it were not for (their manager) stealing their money, and that Pete felt he had no other options... what would have been their fate. Indeed, Pete and Tommy left us far too soon.
