The Name of the Game
Badfinger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw the railway master and I looked him in the eye
I said, "Would you go much faster if you thought that you would die?"
He said, "Not me sir, I could not care, in fact, I would not try.
For protest would not take me far.
It's different, me not being a star."
I lock my feelings in a jar until another day

Oh, comfort me, dear brother, won't you tell me what you know?
For somewhere in this paper world is a place where I can go
Oh, long awaiting mother, is it time to make a show?
And take your babies to your breast
No, we never passed the test
And all our sins should be confessed before we carry on

Oh, don't refuse me
If you choose me, you'll follow my shame
No, don't confuse me
For I know it's the name of the game

I got up off my pillow and I looked up at the sun
I said, "You can see quite clearly, now, the things that we have done
We burned your sacred willow and our battles we have won.
But did we get so very far?

It's different, me not being a star."
I lock my feelings in a jar until we go away

Overall Meaning

In "Name of the Game," Badfinger explores themes of mortality and the human desire for comfort and forgiveness. The lyrics begin with the singer's confrontation with a railway master, in which he questions whether the master would work harder if he thought he might die soon. The master refuses to be swayed, stating that protest wouldn't accomplish anything, particularly for someone who isn't famous. The singer then admits to locking away his own emotions, only to be dealt with at another time.

The singer then turns to his brother, seeking comfort and guidance in this uncertain world. He speaks of a metaphorical paper world, a place of fragility and impermanence where he is searching for a way out. He also addresses his mother, who he suggests could offer him and his siblings shelter and safety. However, he acknowledges that they have faltered in the past, falling short of their own expectations, and perhaps the expectations of those around them.

In the final verse, the singer speaks directly to the sun, a symbol of hope and rebirth. Though he is able to see all that he and those around him have accomplished, he remains disillusioned and doubtful of their ability to succeed. He refers to a "sacred willow," likely a reference to Native American spiritual beliefs or practices, and suggests that even in their victories, they have lost something valuable. The final line once again refers to the singer's tendency to bury his feelings and emotions, indicating a larger theme throughout the song of the importance of confronting difficult truths and emotions.

To me, it doesn't get better than this. This entire album is ,in my view, an undeniable masterpiece. Straight Up was released when I was 17. I knew it would be with me for life.

That album... Smashin' . I was 15 when it was released. Always had my ears glued to the radio every 3pm when the dj plays those hits.

@johnlemon874

Yup. Got into the band from Breaking Bad Babyblue and listened to the whole album and it’s beautiful. Like really, sound wise and from a songwriting perspective I don’t get how this band isn’t more popular.
