Its members are Alister Parker (guitar, bass), John Halvorsen (bass, guitar) and Brent McLachlan (drums, samples).
The sound of Bailter Space changed several times between 1987 and 2003 but certain aural and lyrical consistencies existed throughout. High volume, distortion, harmonics, rhythmic experimentation and subtle use of sampling mark the sound, while ambivalent fascination with the interplay of technology and humanity (often played out in metaphors of space travel) mark the lyrics.
Bailter Space are sometimes compared with My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Skeptics, and High Dependency Unit. Sometimes they are referred to as "the Sonic Youth of the Southern Hemisphere".
Fairly well-known and well-received albums include Robot World, Vortura, and Wammo, all released in the Antipodes through Flying Nun, and in the States through Matador. After thirteen years with no new material, Bailter Space returned with Strobosphere in 2012, and followed that up quickly with Trinine in 2013
There was a shifting line-up during the late 1980s of members of other New Zealand rock groups including The Clean and Pin Group before the line-up stabilized for the Thermos album in 1990.
Alister Parker, John Halvorsen, and Brent McLachlan were previously the three members of The Gordons, an early-1980s New Zealand noise rock group, and two were members of The Skeptics.
In 2004 they released a thus-far retrospective compilation via Flying Nun, and it is an excellent introduction to their material.

I'm an old original wave Shoegazer I'm 47 now and heard this in 93 and all I can say to the young people who love shoegaze and drone......I'm happy u guys,appreciate it because it was hard being 14 and,15 and trying to explain to a pre internet world the beauty of this music.... I was a hardcore kid.....until an older friend introduced me to Ride Nowhere....and I was immediately changed.... in that first 6 months I got to hear MBV loveless.....Chapterhouse....Swervedriver .....Curve......Catherine Wheel Medicine and many more.....as they were coming out!!!!! It was the most transformative time of my life. .Cheers geezers and gazers

Im 23 and I started to listen to shoegaze maybe 4 years ago. My tastes changed a lot in that span and albums that were “unlistenable” to me at the start, are often some of my current favorites. I think there is a learning curb with this genre a bit. Anyways, I realized I really enjoy the ethereal/melancholic/sleepy/wall of noise type of shoegaze.
Well I envy you and what you lived through, and it was cool to read your comment
@calixa
wow, this rules. I love this kind of stuff. isnt it amazing that no matter how obsessed with music you are, no matter how much you know, you can always find new stuff from the past to fall in love with.
@matepoon
Possibly the best NZ song, ever.
@davelockwood2440
Agreed
@jacekbiaecki3433
Shihad had some good stuff, especially from self titled record. "Attack" for example or "A day away".

When I was living on Aro Street, one evening there was this primordial ground throbbing bone vibrating sound emanating from Bodega, just around the corner really. As I came through Aro park into the next street I asked my friend if the knew who was playing there that night. "Bailter Space". It was this song they were playing. I listened to it and really enjoyed it as i walked along two blocks away. It was probably the loudest band I've ever heard coming out of that venue. It sounded good.
@robsmissen4
You guys probably cant believe how good this the band is live. Changed my life in Wellington. Awesome.
@futureshock6302
Thank god for Bailter Space, when your day turns to shit, they always make things seem a little bit better.

Robot World, an unappreciated masterpiece. One of the best albums in rock history. They achieved a sound on this album that I think My Bloody Valentine's Loveless was striving for but didn't attain due to overproduction. Powerful, melodic, propulsive, and a concept album on top of that. The band at its peak.
