The three founding members of the band are Scottish brothers; the Morris brothers (James Morris, Mark Morris and Des Morris). As children in Motherwell, they worked in the entertainment industry as part of a cabaret act. They moved south to England, to Cannock, Staffordshire, where they formed Balaam and the Angel.
1985 saw the band augment their line up with keyboard player ‘Wendy Harper’.
Initially, the band self-released a series of EPs via their own Chapter 22 label and played some tour dates opening for The Cult. This saw Balaam and the Angel catch the attention of Virgin Records who signed them and would release their debut "The Greatest Story Ever Told" in 1986. They toured in support of it in the United States with KISS and label mates Iggy Pop.
A second guitarist, and the first non sibling was added to the band in 1988; Ian McKean. The band began to move away from gothic rock music styles into a sound that had more in common with hard rock. With their new found style they recorded the album "Live Free or Die", which featured the minor rock (#13) and college radio (#18) hit "I Love the Things You Do to Me". This was soon followed up in similar style when they recorded "Days of Madness", before being dropped by Virgin Records. Their song "I'll Show You Something Special" is on the Steve Martin and John Candy movie "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" soundtrack.
At some point, the band were joined by Chris P Notes on Keyboards.

Don't Look Down
Balaam And The Angel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Nobody ever loved me like she does,
Oh, she does, yeah, she does.
And if somebody loved me like she do me,
Oh, she do me, yes, she does.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
I'm in love for the first time.
Don't you know it's gonna last.
It's a love that lasts forever,
It's a love that had no past.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
And from the first time that she really done me,
Oh, she done me, she done me good.
I guess nobody ever really done me,
Oh, she done me, she done me good.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
Don't let me down, don't let me down.
The Balaam and the Angel song "Don't Look Down" is a passionate love song about the fear of losing the one you love. The juxtaposition of the upbeat rhythm and the melancholic lyrics creates a sense of tension and urgency. The repeated phrase "Don't let me down" serves as a plea to the loved one not to abandon the singer. The first verse praises the depth and intensity of their love. The singer, who seems to have never experienced love like this before, is afraid that it might disappear. The second verse depicts the love they share as something unique, something without precedent or history.
The chorus is a straightforward expression of the song's main theme: the fear of losing what you cherish most. The singer needs reassurance that their love is as strong as they believe. The last verse reinforces the idea that nobody else has loved the singer like the loved one does. The repetition of the phrase "she done me good" emphasizes the depth of their connection.
