The three founding members of the band are Scottish brothers; the Morris brothers (James Morris, Mark Morris and Des Morris). As children in Motherwell, they worked in the entertainment industry as part of a cabaret act. They moved south to England, to Cannock, Staffordshire, where they formed Balaam and the Angel.
1985 saw the band augment their line up with keyboard player ‘Wendy Harper’.
Initially, the band self-released a series of EPs via their own Chapter 22 label and played some tour dates opening for The Cult. This saw Balaam and the Angel catch the attention of Virgin Records who signed them and would release their debut "The Greatest Story Ever Told" in 1986. They toured in support of it in the United States with KISS and label mates Iggy Pop.
A second guitarist, and the first non sibling was added to the band in 1988; Ian McKean. The band began to move away from gothic rock music styles into a sound that had more in common with hard rock. With their new found style they recorded the album "Live Free or Die", which featured the minor rock (#13) and college radio (#18) hit "I Love the Things You Do to Me". This was soon followed up in similar style when they recorded "Days of Madness", before being dropped by Virgin Records. Their song "I'll Show You Something Special" is on the Steve Martin and John Candy movie "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" soundtrack.
At some point, the band were joined by Chris P Notes on Keyboards.

I Feel Love
Balaam And The Angel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Running down the tracks of time
For so long
All the things that you do to get so high
You drink the sea and smoke the sky
But no more
To hide the pain inside
I love the things you do to me
But I know I can't help you now
There's a place and you go there without me
It covers you in mystery
For so long
There's a look in your eyes heroine
I can't believe the state you're in
Anymore
Despite the pain inside
I love the things you do to me
I love the things you say to me
But I know I can't help you now
The song "Things You Know" by Balaam And The Angel is an emotional and introspective track that delves into the complexities of addiction and the toll it can take on relationships. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is struggling with substance abuse, with a "train in [their] mind on the wrong line" and "running down the tracks of time". The addiction is consuming and all-encompassing, with the person turning to extreme measures to get high - "You drink the sea and smoke the sky". Despite this, the singer still loves the person and the things they do and say to them, but recognizes that they can no longer help them.
The chorus provides a sense of resignation and helplessness in the face of addiction - "But I know I can't help you now". The sense of loss and isolation is further reinforced by the line "There's a place and you go there without me / It covers you in mystery / For so long". The person's addiction has taken them to a dark and unknown place, and the singer is left on the outside looking in, unable to bridge the divide.
Overall, "Things You Know" is a poignant and powerful exploration of addiction and its impact on relationships. The lyrics are expertly crafted to convey a sense of despair and loss, while still retaining a sense of love and empathy.
