Pull Of The Ground
Balance and Composure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sixteenth day into the year,
The drive was quiet.
I had thoughts in my head.
It was all bad news.

We sat parked,
And I opened up,
You shut down.
This night will only get worse.
It was all bad news.

Get off the ground, you're making things worse.
Won't you get off the ground, you'll make it worse.

Keep your head down,
Time to be honest with myself.
I've lost it all and I'm on my own.
It was all bad news.

Get off the ground, you're making things worse.

I've been having trouble sleeping,
Know that sleep don't come easy
When you loose everything you have.

I just want one night
Where I can rest my eyes,
Sleep tight, all through the night.

And I'll go on the rest of my life,
But I'll know that things can't get any worse.

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of Balance and Composure's "Pull Of The Ground," the singer sets the scene for a dark and introspective moment. It's the sixteenth day of the year, and the drive is quiet, giving the singer plenty of time to brood. Their thoughts are all bad news, hinting at some sort of personal crisis or tragedy that has befallen them. When they arrive at their destination and attempt to confide in someone, that person shuts down and refuses to engage. The singer's despair is palpable as they realize that this night will only get worse.

As the chorus kicks in, the singer seems to be urging themselves to snap out of their funk. "Get off the ground, you're making things worse," they repeat, as if trying to shake themselves out of a downward spiral. But the next verse suggests that it's not so simple. The singer admits that they've "lost it all" and are now on their own. They're struggling to sleep, knowing that they have nothing left to hold onto. The chorus returns, but this time with a slight alteration – "Won't you get off the ground? You'll make it worse." It's almost as if the singer is pleading with themselves, hoping to find the strength to change their situation.
