Loving You
Ball Michael Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's who I am
Loving you is not a choice
Not much reason to rejoice
But it gives me purpose
Gives me voice
To say to the world
This is why I live
This is why I live
Loving you is why I do the things I do
Loving you is not in my control
But loving you I have a goal
For what's left of my life
I will live
And I will die
For you
It gives me purpose
Gives me voice
To say to the world
This is why I live
Yes, this is why I live
Loving you is why I do the things I do
Loving you is not in my control
But loving you
I have a goal
For what's left of my life
I will live
And I will die
For you
I will live
And I will die
For you
The lyrics to Ball Michael's song Loving You describe a love that is all-consuming and essential to the singer's identity. He states that his love for the other person is not a choice, but rather an integral part of who he is. Although there may not be much reason to rejoice in this love, it gives him purpose and a voice to proclaim his devotion to the world. The singer explains that this love is why he does the things he does and sets a goal for his life to live and die for the object of his affection.
The lyrics speak to the power of love and the influence it can have on a person's life. It is not something that can be easily controlled or chosen; it is a force that can drive a person to do incredible things. The singer's love for the other person is so profound that it gives him a sense of purpose and direction in life.
The chorus of the song is particularly poignant, with its repetition of the phrase "this is why I live." It is a bold statement from the singer, proclaiming that his love for the other person is his reason for being alive. The final lines of the song, "I will live and I will die for you," signify a level of devotion that is both intense and selfless.
Overall, Loving You conveys a message of deep love and devotion that is both beautiful and heartbreaking. It speaks to the power of love to shape a person's life and provide meaning and purpose.

I love this song. So much emotions and grace. It talks about an unrequited love- the most painful kind of love.

I saw Passion in the West End with Michael Ball several times. This song is one of the key moments. It was deeply moving and one felt convinced by and understood Fosca (the character who sings it) by this song. Passion was the most extraordinary musical theatre experience of my life. I was moved to involuntary tears from the opening bars. The piece is a profound exploration of what it means to love.

Passion is, by far, my favorite in musical theatre. I wasn’t able to see Michael perform the role of Giorgio, but I have the soundtrack. The DVD with Jere Shea and Donna Murphy is amazing! I wish Michael could have had a run at playing Giorgio opposite Donna Murphy’s Fosca. That would have been musical heaven.
@AGMundy
@Karen I thought the casting in both productions was excellent. I preferred the London staging for its use of light and dark. Passion retains its extraordinary power. I wrote to Stephen Sondheim about this and his other work, to which he kindly responded in his typical self-deprecating way - saying my compliments had done his ego no end of good. I'm pleased to read someone else feels as moved as I do.
