Hot Line
Bananarama Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

With your smile you're making plans
You've got the world right in the palm of your hands.
Everything you touch is gold but your future life is bought and sold.
It seems to me that you've got it made
But you never show that you're afraid.
Now the voices in your head they make you scream
And drive you mad.
You're on a hot line to heaven
Now you're all alone
Riding on a hot line
Riding on a hot line to heaven

Standing all on your own.
Staring eyes as cold as stone
I want to be at the sands alone.
Reaching out to cry for help

Once a man but now you're just a shell.
You can make a deal
You make the break
But you're heading for an early grave.
You've got to find it
Got to try

Something special to get you high.
You're on a hot line to heaven
Now you're all alone
You're on a hot line to heaven
Now you're all alone

It seems to me that you've got it made
But you're heading for an early break.
But now some voices in your head
They make you scream and drive you mad.

You're on a hot line to heaven
Now you're all alone
You're on a hot line to heaven
Now you're all alone

You're on a hot line to heaven
Now you're all alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bananarama's song "Hot Line" seem to be addressing a person who, on the surface, appears to have everything going for them. The first verse describes this person as having the ability to make plans and execute them with ease, but also as someone whose life is already predetermined, leading to a feeling of being trapped. However, the second verse takes a darker turn, describing the person as now being hollow and empty, and "just a shell." They can make deals and break them, but are heading towards an early grave. The chorus, "You're on a hot line to heaven/ Now you're all alone," is a warning to this person that their choices and actions are leading them down a destructive path.

The lyrics hint at mental health struggles, as the voices in the person's head are described as "driving them mad." The line "reaching out to cry for help" suggests that this person is aware that they need assistance, but feels unable to ask for it. The repetition of the chorus further reinforces the idea that this person is isolated and alone, potentially due to their actions or mindset.

Overall, the lyrics of "Hot Line" are a cautionary tale about the dangers of pursuing success and pleasure at all costs. The song highlights the importance of taking care of one's mental health and seeking help when needed.

I don't understand why this song wasn't a huge hit , perfect 80s sounds and great vocals . Also has a hell of message . Guess that's happens when there is a plethora of amazing songs from this time .

@graemewatson1106

It might be 2022 but I’m trapped in the 80s music wise can’t stop listening to this song brilliant

@pathat3027

@Aramanth

My favorite song always! I think this is their best harmony and the instrumentation is beautiful! Love Siobhan's cheeky smile at 2:28! Should have been a hit!

@alondathomas293

Looks like they had a lot of fun doing this video, and the song isn't bad either,lol. I really only know a handful of songs by this group, so I'm checking out stuff by them I've never heard, like this one. It's pure '80s, down to the hairstyles and synth music, lol.

@jasonblitz7454

I think unfortunately the lyrics to Hotline To Heaven were far too clever to be a hit. Bananarama forever xxx

@glamnesianouveaux2039

Sheer GENIUS. THIS is what POP music should be. Sorry Pete Waterman but you destroyed a perfectly perfect band who made pop music with a message. Hotline To Heaven is among one of Bananarama's most UNDERRATED singles! I

@Shane-Flanagan

Yeah this was the best version of the group, they were real and relatable.
Waterman made them very polished and camp later. No wonder Siobhan left

@triadafillos1

I can't agree more....

@_B.M_

Agree but remember, they went to SAW. I just guess they saw fame over the quality of the lyrics
