In North America, back in the 80s, we thought "Venus" was their one-hit wonder. Than it was later in life that we became aware of other songs: "Robert De Niro's Waiting" and even better than that: "I Heard a Rumour and Cruel Summer." After that we found out "Venus" was an original by Shocking Blue from 1969 which sounds awesome!

The girl is so terrified of the horrors that lie outside her house that she'd rather escape into fantasy than face reality cause it's so scary. The song is about escapism. Escaping the dark reality of life. So I think that's why the song is so upbeat despite the dark lyrics cause the girl wants to feel happy again so she disassociates from her reality into her fantasy land and the upbeat sounds that accompany the lyrics reflect her desire to escape from the horrors of reality.

Heard this on the radio today......and straightaway I was 12 years old again. Listening to it whilst doing my homework or making sure I'd packed my football boots for PE the next day, talking about Bananarama to some of the other lads at school, not knowing who Robert De Niro was (but not caring!), and really not having a worry in the world. 39 years ago now.....but seems more like 39 days in some ways. Weren't we lucky to have grown up with sheer, flawless pop like this one?

but it all sounded so much the same rather than each song having its own character.

I’m from Russia, and the most interesting thing about this song for me is that a particular Russian band, one of the most celebrated during 80s-90s, recorded a kind of rendition of this song with De Niro changed to “Alain Delon, who talks French”, which was one of their hits at the time. However, their version was much darker and desperate talking about a girl who escapes from the reality where she has to undergo sexual violence of her own father into the world of her dreams (this band, Nautilus Pompilius, had a tendency for obscure lyrics). However, this terrifying subtext was so well-hidden that most of the people for whom “Alain Delon” is a song of their youth and a nostalgic meme are completely unaware of its true meaning. For many this song remains a careless piece to this day. And, what is even less known in Russia is that “Alain Delon” was based on a song by Bananarama which is not really popular in my country. That’s how ironic music history sometimes gets.
