Like shattered teenage dreams
Boys living next door
Are never what they seem, oooh
A walk in the park can become a bad dream
People are staring and following me
This is my only escape from it all
Watching a film or a face on the wall
Robert De Niro's waiting
Talking Italian

Robert De Niro's waiting
I don't need a boy
I've got a man of steel
Don't come any closer
I don't wanna feel, oooh
You're breathing, you're touching
But nothing's for free
I never want this to happen to me
Don't try to change me you're wasting your time
Now I've got something much better in mind

The lyrics of Bananarama's "Robert De Niro's Waiting" tell a story of a girl who has had her heart broken by a boy who turned out to be different from what she expected. She feels trapped and followed, and her only escape is through watching movies or a face on the wall. The title of the song refers to Robert De Niro, who is waiting for her, talking Italian. It's unclear whether De Niro is a real person or just a fictional character, but he represents the girl's desire to escape and find a better life.
The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song with the metaphor of hopes dashed to the floor like shattered teenage dreams. The second verse introduces the idea that the girl doesn't need a boy, she has a man of steel. This can be interpreted as a reference to her own inner strength or to a better, more reliable man in her life. The chorus repeats the phrase "Robert De Niro's waiting, talking Italian" three times, emphasizing his importance as a symbol of escape and hope in the girl's life.
The bridge of the song repeats the first verse, with added emphasis on the idea that even a walk in the park can become a bad dream when people are staring and following her. The song ends with a final chorus, where the girl repeats the phrase "talking Italian" over and over again, creating a dreamlike, almost hypnotic effect.
Overall, "Robert De Niro's Waiting" is a song about escape and the search for something better in life. The character of Robert De Niro represents the promise of a new life, free from the difficulties and troubles of the past.

There's actually research on that but I don't wanna burst your bubble so if you're not interested in why so many people have this feeling don't continue reading.
You have been warned.
Research has shown that people remember their childhood and teenage years as the safest, most carefree, liberating time in their life. The music that one repeatedly listens to during this time becomes associated with those feelings and memories and create an especially strong emotional connection with us. It's not that no one makes good music anymore or that the world has more or less problems now than back then. Our lives just changed and became busier and more complicated. We became aware of everything that is going on in the world, we have to work, earn money and take responsibility for our actions. This is true for all generations, regardless of musical genres or artists or bands that might exist at the time.
