In what you see
I need to know 'cause you come and you go as you please
All I'm asking for
Is a little more
Just do a little bit more 'cause I need to be sure
Hey hey amor
Come on come on encore
I'm waiting for you
If I gave to you
A kiss out of the blue
Would you tell me
Would you tell me
Our love is true
If I gave to you
A kiss out of the blue
Would you tell me
Would you tell me
Our love is true
No ain't no use
When you know the truth
You can try to resist me but you're gonna lose
Ain't no big deal
We can make this real
All you gotta do is just do as you feel
Hey hey amor
Give me what I'm waiting for
Come on come on encore
I'm waiting for you
If I gave to you
A kiss out of the blue
Would you tell me
Would you tell me
Our love is true
If I gave to you
A kiss out of the blue
Would you tell me
Would you tell me
Our love is true
If I gave to you
A kiss out of the blue
Would you tell me
Would you tell me
Our love is true
Ain't no big deal
Just do as you feel
Just do as you feel
No big deal

Bananarama's song "If" is a classic new wave/pop hit that explores the theme of uncertainty in a relationship. The lyrics speak to the feeling of insecurity that arises when one partner is unclear about the other's feelings. The opening lines of the song ask a simple yet profound question: "Do you believe in what you see?" This line sets the stage for the rest of the song, which is essentially about trust and communication. Lead singer Sara Dallin implores her lover to show her more affection, to give her a reason to trust in their relationship, and to take a leap of faith on love.
Throughout the song, there is a palpable sense of longing and desire. The chorus, with its repetition of the line "If I gave to you a kiss out of the blue, would you tell me our love is true?" is both romantic and desperate. It's as if the singer is trying to get a concrete read on the relationship, to understand the depth of her lover's feelings. The song also captures the tension and frustration that exists when one partner is more invested in a relationship than the other. The lines "I need to know 'cause you come and you go as you please" and "Just do a little bit more 'cause I need to be sure" give voice to the fear and anxiety that can result when one partner feels like they are putting more into the relationship than they are getting back.
Overall, "If" is a catchy and relatable song that captures the complexities of modern relationships. It speaks to the universal desire for clarity and honesty, and the fear and uncertainty that can arise when those things are lacking.
